Golden Section Homage: Bill Nye "The Science Guy"

Sophia White, Grade 10

Mixed Media 44cm x 30cm

School: Governor Simcoe Secondary School

Teacher: Mr. Michael Grant

Principal: Ms. Teri Thompson

Artist Statement: In this mixed-media piece, I created an homage to Bill Nye “The Science Guy”. As per the instructions for this Renaissance-related project, I created an homage of Mr. Nye within the framework of the Golden Section, which was a mathematical tool used by Renaissance artists to create divine composition. Within each rectangle, I rendered various symbols via various mediums that reflect the career of this famous and approachable scientist.

Beautiful Tears

Samantha Colbey, Grade 11

Mixed Media 45.7cm x 61cm

School: Governor Simcoe Secondary School

Teacher: Mr. Michael Grant

Principal: Ms. Teri Thompson

Artist Statement: Via mixed-media, I attempted to show how crying can be beautiful. When tears are shed, one does not always feel sorrow – happy tears can emanate from joy. Ultimately, tears allow people to emote, which is beautiful and necessary.

All About Me

Maya Kolbinson, Grade 9

Mixed Media

School: Port Colborne High School

Teacher: Ms. Sandra Palencar

Principal: Mr. Paul Taylor

Artist Statement: I chose the title, “All About Me”, because this art piece represents me. It shows what I enjoy doing, and what I think about.

I chose to create this piece for my final project because I thought it would be interesting to put together pieces of me into one project using what I have learned throughout the course. For example, pencil sketches and use of colour.

I consider my art to be contemporary art. I chose this piece to express who I am in 2021.

Texture Collage

Nico Valvo, Grade 10

Collage

School: A.N. Myer Secondary School

Teacher: Mr. Joe Fernandez

Principal: Mrs. Kim Carruthers

Artist Statement: I enjoyed making this piece because it reflected something that I love, baseball. As you can see, it is a frozen image of the man in his backswing (after he's hit the ball). I tried to make the cutout of this man as precise as I could given the small size of the piece. Originally, I was going to make the collage exactly as it was seen in the reference image. However, my art teacher, Mr. Fernandez advised me to flip the background to improve contrast. Because of this, I feel like it really expanded my thinking and allowed me to have some fun with this piece. I also added a little sound bubble thing that you would see in old Batman comics or shows. I think this is what made it really unique and made it more enjoyable to look at. Overall, I believe that this piece of art was pretty well done by my standards. I was very happy with how it turned out given the fact that I had never done something like this before.
