Artist Statement: Each hidden image is a representation of my grandma…

Ladybug- The ladybug is known for being a symbol of luck, love, great fortune, and protection. My grandma was a protector, of both myself, and my entire family.

Butterfly- The butterfly represents my grandma’s favourite insect. She loved each unique pattern they had, and the magical way they glided through the air.

Bumblebee- The bumblebee describes my grandma’s best quality…. her sting! She was the sweetest lady, however the second you tried to hurt her or anyone she loved, you would get stung.

Rose- A rose was the very first thing my grandma taught me to draw, it represents a bonding moment with my grandma and the beginning of my artistic path.

Leaf- My grandma would let life take her wherever it was going, no regrets, no looking back. When a gust of wind comes, the leaves get swept up and go wherever they are taken.

Tree- She would always say to me, “Look at that tree, isn’t it so amazing!” And you could never get away with a quick glance, it had to be direct eye contact. Some of my fondest memories are from the hikes and walks we took through the woods.

Star- The star represents how bright she shone, and how whenever she walked into a room it seemed to light up a bit more. She was a star in every way possible.

Cardinal- My grandma died Dec 1st, 2018. Ever since she died my mom and I have been noticing when we are sad, a cardinal tends to appear on the tree outside my house. We like to believe that Jan is checking on us through the eyes of a cardinal.

Sunflower- The sunflower relates to my grandma because she made all of the decor in my mom’s university dorm. She was the kind of person who wouldn’t think twice before helping someone else, that’s what was great about her.

Paintbrush (located on the dress of the first girl in the painting)- Finally, the paintbrush. The paintbrush represents her talent. She made the most beautiful paintings I’ve ever seen and it is one of the only things I have left to remember her by. I am so grateful for what she taught me, and for being lucky enough to have such great memories with her.
