Hong Kong's Chief Inspector

Camar Thompson, Grade 11

Pencil/Graphite on Paper 11inX14in

School: Welland Centennial Secondary School

Teacher: Mrs. Lori Thibault

Principal: Mrs. Tammy Zonneveld

Artist Statement: This project focused on choosing a character from a book or movie and drawing the proper proportions and the shading of their face and facial features. I chose to draw Yan Naing Lee- Jackie Chan. The first thing I did was draw a light outline of the head. I used video resources provided on youtube to accurately draw proportion and to help create the outlines of the facial features. Once I finished the basic outlining, I started to do light shading around the face adding in more detail, then lightly shading in the facial features. I would shade the entire face before going darker so that everything would transition at the same time. I also used the stamp and the kneaded eraser to blend the shade and to create some of the highlights. I continued doing this process until I thought that my drawing was accurate to the reference image.

Self Portrait

Xzarah Ali-Bission, Grade 10

Graphite and Coloured Pencil on Paper

School: Thorold Secondary School

Teacher: Mrs. Carlee McTavish

Principal: Mrs. Karen Ferguson

Artist Statement: This piece is inspired by artists Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald. I chose a tiger with cherry blossoms for my repeating pattern because tigers are the animals you don’t want to mess with, their fierce and beautiful creatures, and I would like people to see me like that. I chose cherry blossoms because they’re my favourite flower. I just picked some of my favourite colours. I really like the way blue and orange look next to each other, and tigers are orange, so I thought blue would be the perfect colour to make the page pop. The historical pose I chose seemed sophisticated and I liked how she was holding her head up with her finger. I think I did pretty well with the shading on my clothes and my face, I was kind of scared to shade in my face, but it ended up looking really good even though it was not that dark.

ME!

Anna Chatzis, Grade 10

Graphite and Coloured Pencils on Paper

School: Thorold Secondary School

Teacher: Mrs. Carlee McTavish

Principal: Mrs. Karen Ferguson

Artist Statement: I created a self portrait in graphite and coloured pencils.

I made this piece with a photo reference, I started with a basic shape and started working on my facial features starting from my nose. I shaded in all the details and then began to draw my roses, I then went in with my coloured pencils and added the bright splash of colours I wanted. I finished off everything by adding some small highlights to my hat.

I made it because I wanted to challenge myself with something new, I had never done a human portrait of anyone before let alone myself. I wanted to capture myself in a fun position that had a little posing moment. All the things in my portrait have some sort of important connection to me, the roses are my Mom’s and my favorite flower, my Dad bought me my favourite hoodie that I am wearing. My hair isn’t straightened but left natural like it normally looks, I am wearing my favourite matching hat and black jeans as well. The inspiration for this piece was my Mom, she is the one person closest to me that draws people and can capture a likeness of someone so perfectly, she has always been the one inspiring me to do better from the beginning. She was the main reason I started drawing to begin with and found something I love to do. I wanted to show that I am confident in myself and that that is essentially me.

Self Portrait

Mercedes Brown, Grade 10

Coloured pencil and graphite on paper

School: Thorold Secondary School

Teacher: Mrs. Carlee McTavish

Principal: Mrs. Karen Ferguson

Artist Statement: This piece is a recreation of one of Fredrick Douglass' portraits but replaced with a drawing of me. The medium used is coloured pencil and graphite on paper and was created to express me and my interest. The pattern I have chosen are earbuds with the name Melanie Martinez. The earbuds are what represent my love for listening to music, and the name “Melanie Martinez” is my favorite musical artist. The sweater I’m wearing was my favorite sweater which I’ve owned for almost 5 years. It’s blue, which is my favorite colour and it carries many memories throughout my childhood. The reason I chose this pose is because it’s the same one Fredrick Douglass did in one of his portraits. He is someone who represents honor, bravery, and power, and when he finally escaped slavery, he became an activist and began to help those who couldn’t help themselves. This is someone I aspire to be when I’m older and even today, helping others is something I enjoy. I hope one day to make as big of a difference as he did.

Portrait of Marilyn

Diamond Burka, Grade 10

Pencil/Graphite on Paper

School: Stamford Collegiate

Teacher: Ms. Larissa Turcotte

Principal: Mr. Neil Sheard

"Isla Fisher"

Rowen Treleaven, Grade 10

Pencil/Graphite on Paper 12x18 inches

School: Grimsby Secondary School

Teacher: Ms. Vicki Schindel

Principal: Mr. Mat Miller

Artist Statement: My portrait drawing was of Isla Fisher. I chose to draw this actress because she is in one of my all time favourite movies, “Now You See Me”. The symbol I chose to represent her was the symbol of the four horsemen in “Now You See Me” because it was the first movie I watched with her in it, and the movie that's stuck with me the longest. She has also voice-acted in several movies and shows from when I was younger, and those movies impacted who I am today. That is why I chose to draw Isla Fisher for my portrait drawing.

Peggy Carter

Kendra Benner, Grade 11

Pencil Crayon

School: Port Colborne High School

Teacher: Ms. Sandra Palencar

Principal: Mr. Paul Taylor

Artist Statement: I chose to do this for my culminating so I can add onto my my series of characters that I am currently working on, which I named the MARVEL series. Peggy Carter is one of the main characters in Captain America.

Peggy Carter has been my role model every since I was a little kid when the movie first came out. She is the kind of woman that doesn’t let a man tell her what to do, so she’s this independent woman that doesn’t need anyone.

I used my new Prismacolours for this piece, it is my first drawing ever using them and I love them.
