The Black women’s rights movement started because Black women were often left out of both the fight for racial equality and the women’s rights movement. Shirley Chisholm was the first Black woman elected to Congress and the first to run for president from a major political party, standing up for both women’s and civil rights. Madam C.J. Walker became the first self-made Black female millionaire by creating hair products for Black women, helping them gain confidence and financial independence. Angela Davis is known for fighting against racism and unfair treatment in the prison system, and she spoke out for the freedom and rights of Black people, especially women.
