This semester we will be making a desktop organizer.
The design problem is having a cluttered desk which the desktop organizer will help with.
These are the design constraints, the things you can't do.
To measure this cube I had to incorporate the width of the cardboard( 1/8) since, it isn't flat. After that I used a visual diagram to map out the measurements of all the sides.
I think the design is unique because you can build it different ways so if you get tired of one design you can change it around. This design has variety and repetition a little bit. It also has different shapes, groves and lines.
This design is cool and unique because it doesn't have the standard rectangular base. You also can open and close the organizer. This design has space(inside of it), form(it is kind of in a prism form, emphasis(the middle of the design might catch the eye of someone and the shape).
This design is unique because it doesn't sit straight up but moves around. This design has shape and movement because of the shape of the design.
This is my first drawing of my design. I first started with the shape being a triangular prism. The design used, shape space, and repetition.
I came up with this idea on my own. I really didn't see any organizers like this to use for inspiration. I didn't know which shape I wanted to use( that's why there are two different designs) but I decided to use the shape on the bottom.
This is a drawing of my model. I have two drawers in the front and four compartments(two on each side). Then on the top is a secret compartment. I used the elements and principle of design, shape, space and repetition.
I chose this view because it shows how all of my compartments look not in 3d version.
This is a drawing of my organizer in 2d form, from the top, with the dimensions.
These two models were my very first models. As you can see they show to different shapes and this is because I didn't know what shape I wanted to use for my design. I did not make the compartments on my models since I hadn't decided what shape I would use. In these models you can see my use of shape (the shape of the model) and my use of space (the open area ). The feedback I received was about, how I would fit things into my design and where would the 6 compartment go.
My model has two drawers in the front that con hold things like erasers, paperclips, or anything small. Then the four compartments on the side can hold larger things like rulers, pencils, glue/glue sticks. Also, the secret compartment in the back can hold wider things like sticky notes. I learned how to make the compartments on the side without cutting each induvial piece. I used the feedback I received in my final model by clearly showing my compartments and the things it can hold.
I used all of the items in my organizer to complete my organizer. I used pencils to sketch out my design, the scissors to cut out my carboard and the hot glue sticks to actually put it together.
In this project I used all of the steps in the design process, research, idea and brainstorming, prototyping, and testing. Research, I looked up different desktop organizers to get inspiration for my personal design. Idea and brainstorming, I drew the designs I had in my mind down then narrowed down the actual design I wanted and added where I wanted my compartments to go. Prototyping, I made my first models out of cardboard without any compartments shown. Testing, I built my actual organizer and filled it with my everyday school supplies to confirm it could withstand the weight of the items. I used the element shape(the shape of my organizer), space(the section for my phone), and repetition(the compartments are the same on each side). I choose the shape of my organizer because I did not want a basic square shape and this was one of the first shapes that came to mind in my planning process. I did not use or do anything interesting with the material, I just used cardboard and cardstock paper, and hot glue to hold it together. I enjoyed actually building my organizer the most , the drawing was the most difficult part of the process, and in the end I was satisfied with my organizer so I wouldn't change anything.
