What is Borax? What chemical elements or compounds are in it?
Why do you use hot water? What happens as the water cools?
How is your 3D sculpture dynamic?
Borax, or sodium borate, is a compound often used for cleaning. It is made of boron sodium and oxygen. We use hot water instead of cold because it is able to dissolve more borax before becoming supersaturated. As the water cools, the borax forms crystals around the pipe cleaner sculpture. My pipe cleaner sculpture is dynamic because it is 3D and has a unique form, with lots of parts sticking out of the large, 3D, main section.
This year in art I've been taught about shapes, which can help in the geometry parts of math. So far this year, I've created a mandala based on electron configuration, which displayed pattern and color. When I'm planning a piece of art, I try out several ideas in a rough sketch, as I did with the "It's Elementary" project, which I can show by adding my sketches to the slideshows we create of our work. In class, we have learned about impressionism, where the artist uses vivid colors and short brushstrokes to create a piece that depicts the emotions and impressions someone gets from the subject.
This project incorporates STEAM by combining the chemistry concept of electron configurations and the art of mandalas, and the patterns involved in them. The mandala research helped me consider new perspectives as I learned about how each religion used mandalas. My work was very successful because my group worked very well together and created ideas that worked well together. If I were the teacher, I would give the students some input in their groups.
In the project–Shaping Our World–we learned about ancient civilizations’ culture, government, and ways of life. We also learned about writing screenplays, and about creating a cohesive plot.
The main idea of the topic was to learn about an ancient civilization, and an important point in that civilization’s history.
Some facts about Ancient Egypt include that while they were usually polytheistic, one pharaoh tried to forcefully convert Egypt to monotheism. In the world, several modern alphabets are based on the egyptian alphabets. I wonder how that transition occurred, or what other alphabets it combined with to create our modern alphabets.
In conclusion, we researched our assigned civilization in order to create a story about that civilization and it’s history.
How are mandalas used? How do they relate to world civilizations? What design principles are used? How could you use a mandala to depict an atom?
Mandalas are used in healing meditation by Buddhist monks, and therefore relate to Buddhist civilizations. In mandalas, some common principles used are pattern, balance, and rhythem.
We finished writing our scripts and decided who would play which characters. Over the next few days, we will independently start memorizing our lines.
We had a writing workshop with an actor/writer. We talked about developing characters and plots. then, we worked on our scripts
Today we started our scripts. We got the first scene done today, where it is established that Akhenaten is trying to convert Egypt to monotheism
How could AI hurt or benefit art, and how it is related to other subjects?
AI could hurt art deeply, and already is, because AI is taking art from human artists without their consent, and using it to generate artwork for the public, meaning that people's art is being given out without the artist's consent or payment.
Today we worked on developing the plot of our play. We used a plot diagram to determine what the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution of our story would be. We decided to tell the story of Akhenaten, an Egyptian pharaoh who tried to forcefully convert Egypt to monotheism, and his son, King Tut, who restored the old gods after his father's death.
Today we started researching because our project is writing and performing plays about ancient societies. My group got Egypt. After researching ancient Egypt's religion, politics, culture, and economy, we started brainstorming the who/what/when/where of our play.
Today we started a new project. We created contracts in our groups to keep the work fair and to keep collaboration. We created 5 group norms about these ideals.

Describe how the Neolithic revolution led to injustices within religions, social classes, and between genders. Please provide examples for each analysis.
Describe early neolithic technology and inventions. Please provide examples for each analysis.
Describe the rise of Interregional trade routes and how that led to the spread of religions. Give examples.
Explain the difference between centralized and decentralized governments. Please give examples of each.
List and explain six (6) significant terms that you should remember going into Period 1.
The Neolithic led to injustices, like those within religions, social classes, and genders, because agriculture led to social stratification, which caused hierarchies. The Neolithic Revolution also led to the desire to take over land, like when the Jewish people’s land was taken, and they were forced into slavery. With social stratification, social classes developed. For example, in India, the people created social classes based on their religious texts, which became the Caste system. Gender injustice, like patriarchy, became very common. Paleolithic societies were often more egalitarian than Neolithic societies, like how in ancient Greece women weren’t considered citizens.
Some early technologies that several ancient civilizations developed were irrigation, dating, and writing systems. In Mesopotamia, they developed a writing system called Cuneiform, and in Egypt they had hieroglyphics. In ancient China, we can see early writings on oracle bones. We have no way of translating the alphabet of the Indus River Valley Civilization, but we know they had one. Egypt had a date system, and Mesopotamia created the base 60 time system. They both also had irrigation systems.
A prime example of interregional trade routes developing is the Silk Road in China. China had artisan goods that it could trade to neighboring countries, like silk. This started the development of several important trade routes, which became the Silk Road. These trade routes made it possible for Indian practitioners of Buddhism to travel to China, where they spread their religion there. Buddhism eventually was promoted in the Sui Dynasty.
Centralized governments have one entity making decisions in order to preserve order and unity. Decentralized governments have smaller units that make their own decisions to meet the needs of different groups. When ancient China decided to implement bureaucracy, it helped them increase their Centralized government, because they could replace the aristocrats that would defend their homes with bureaucrats that were loyal to the emperor. The Gupta dynasty in South Asia is an example of a decentralized government. The Guptas left decision-making up to local leaders, giving up some of their federal control.
Codification is the writing down of rules/laws of a religion or government.
Pastoralists are people who turned to nomadic herding as a result of not being able to farm due to non-arable land.
A dynasty is a series of rulers in the same bloodline
Egalitarian means Equal/an equal society, often referring to gender equality
Social Stratification is the division of people into groups, like social classes or work groups.
Tribunes are lobbyists (people who are paid to make sure that the government officials vote a certain way, often through bribes) for the plebeians
Art Comp II
Art is something creative that makes people feel something or think about something. In my opinion, art has to have a passion behind it, and whether the passion is something that the viewers feel or something that the artist feel depends on the individual work. Art can be applied to other subjects when you apply creativity and passion to them. Math and Science can become art when you find a way to use it creatively in a new and interesting way. English can easily be an art through writing. And History can be used in art, and it often is, like in historical paintings.
