For this project, we chose an artist that we admired and created a piece that was in some way inspired by them. For example, we could use a medium, style, or subject they were known for. I chose a local tattoo artist named Christine Lu whose work I love looking at when I stop by the art gallery/tattoo shop that she works at, which is very close to my house. I used a rubber base to tattoo a design I created based on her work.
People started using abstraction in Modernist art to focus on showing the patterns and impressions of a scene, instead of showing a realistic depiction. The flatness and bending of perspective used in some forms of Modernism, like cubism, is similar to ancient Mesopotamian and Egyptian art, where pictures would show both frontal and side perspectives at once. Abstract art can be related to math because abstract art often focuses on patterns and shapes. I think that graphs or charts could be used to create data-based abstract art. I think the patterns of the graphs or charts could be replicated in the art. Personally, however, I prefer to create art in a more personally expressive way, instead of using data.
I was interviewed by a classmate about my work on the "It's Elementary" project.
How are mandalas used? How do they relate to world civilizations? What design principles are used? How could you use a mandala to depict an atom?
Mandalas are used in healing meditation by Buddhist monks, and therefore relate to Buddhist civilizations. In mandalas, some common principles used are pattern, balance, and rhythem.
