Unearthing Farm is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that aims to cultivate a vibrant community green space through a hyper-local farm and market. I received an email from Ms. AJ advertising the internship, and it happened that my mother got it as well. My mom signed me up for it because she said it would look good on my resume, it would get me out of the house, and make some money. When I first started the internship, I wasn't really into it. It would be cold in the mornings and slowly get warmer as the day progressed. I decided to see it through and stay longer. I'm glad I did because I ended up enjoying my experience there. There was a day where we spent all day in the creek to pick up trash and weed some of the invasive species of plants. All of the student interns were able to pick a section from each bed and we were able to pick what we wanted to grow in our beds as well. My mission was to make pickles so in my bed I grew, cucumbers, dill, scallions, lettuce, and peppers. I learned about different types of plant species(native and invasive), how to identify weeds, the proper way to weed, different types of composting, how to make dyes out of plants, how to create flower arrangements, how to directly sew seeds into the ground, animal husbandry, how to set up a plant bed, how to harvest plants, and how to work the market. On the last day of the internship, all the interns gathered different herbs, and vegetables, and made flower arrangements. We created a stand and sold most of everything. As a total, we made $155 within 2 hours.
