Unearthing Farm is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that aims to cultivate a vibrant community green space through a hyper-local farm and market. I received an email from Ms. AJ advertising the internship, and it happened that my mother got it as well. My mom signed me up for it because she said it would look good on my resume, it would get me out of the house, and make some money. When I first started the internship, I wasn't really into it. It would be cold in the mornings and slowly get warmer as the day progressed. I decided to see it through and stay longer. I'm glad I did because I ended up enjoying my experience there. There was a day where we spent all day in the creek to pick up trash and weed some of the invasive species of plants. All of the student interns were able to pick a section from each bed and we were able to pick what we wanted to grow in our beds as well. My mission was to make pickles so in my bed I grew, cucumbers, dill, scallions, lettuce, and peppers. I learned about different types of plant species(native and invasive), how to identify weeds, the proper way to weed, different types of composting, how to make dyes out of plants, how to create flower arrangements, how to directly sew seeds into the ground, animal husbandry, how to set up a plant bed, how to harvest plants, and how to work the market. On the last day of the internship, all the interns gathered different herbs, and vegetables, and made flower arrangements. We created a stand and sold most of everything. As a total, we made $155 within 2 hours.Â
I have been playing tennis since I was about 9 or 10 years old. My grandmother introduced me into it at a summer camp she enrolled me in. I started to enjoy it, so I took lessons throughout the course of the summer. I took a few years off because at the elementary I attended they didn't have tennis, so I eventually stop playing. A few years ago, I was talking to my grandmother about how I wanted to get back into tennis because I heard that Drew had a tennis team. My grandmother ran into a tennis coach, who is my private coach now, while playing pickleball at home court. They then started to arrange schedules and I got to work. Getting back into tennis after a few years was a struggle but, I was getting better and better each day learning new techniques and strategies. When tenth grade year came about I was ready to be on the team. I was really feeling the pressure about being good enough for a team to play actual tournaments with. Within a few minutes, I MADE THE TEAM!!!!!!!! From then, it was a constant and steady grind of work. We played so many schools, the good ones and the terrible ones, that our wins constituted us to go to REGIONALS!!!!!! Being at regionals was an amazing memory, it was also the day of the solar eclipse. After a long day of hard work, we were pronounced 4th in the Region, which mean we were going to the STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS!!!! At state I was highly confident in myself that I could beat whoever I was playing. We went to Rockmart High School to play at State. The girl I was playing with was really good, but her only issue was having consistent serves. My serves 99% of the time are consistent. During the match it started to rain and I was doing well. We were told to finish the first set but I ended up losing by 1 point. Which caused me to lose state because it started to rain. I didn't think it was fair to end the match because it rained. They should have postponed it so we could have finished the match. I was so close to winning. Next tennis season, I am hoping to win state.
