In this activity, we watched the movie Black Panther, and throughout the movie, we would take notes of the music, and determine the purpose of a certain track in it's scene, and the types of emotions they are trying to convey. This would include listening for certain tracks and taking note of when they played and how they made us feel. This would also include watching the cast, and seeing how they behave when certain music played, and how to know when music is dictating when a character says something, or does an action.
The main thing I learned from this activity was how to analyze music in movies, and understand the significance they have. Putting this into context is looking at a movie like Star Wars and taking the music away, and looking at how much story and emotion is removed from the movie. The reason I chose this activity was because I personally have a strong connectiong with film scores, and being able to analyze a movie for it's music is very exciting.
This was the final project of the year for Harp. This is where every class came together on a single night and played pieces that we have been practicing for months. In my class, we played three songs, 'The Water is Wide', 'Zulu Lullaby', and 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen'. For the third piece, we were able to talk with the original arranger and receive her critique, as well as more advice on how to really perfect our song. We were pleasantly surprised to perform as well as we did on the final piece, due to lacking a conductor, as she was playing with us.
The main thing that I've learned from the preparation to perform, and the actual performance is teamwork, and having to trust other people to create something as amazing as a ensemble song. It taught me a lot about music in general, reading music, and turning it into what everyone hears, and also being able to play an instrument like the harp in front of a large audience which was an amazing experience. I chose this project because of how much it has taught me just in one night, about music, people, and teamwork.
