Open Book
The four words that I chose were principle, kinsfolk, flow, and good-natured. As an educator, my grandmother was a principal and was described as good-natured. My favorite memories regarding my grandmother surround our family reunions held in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and the words that flow reminded me of our beach days. My grandmother and I are kinsfolk, leading to my choosing the word.
Birdie
This is a representation of a house in Hilton Head, South Carolina. For our family reunions would we would go to Hilton Head to hold our annual McGregor Cup, golf tournament.
Peaches and Muscadines
The muscadines represent my Nana’s origin in North Carolina and the peach-headed girl represents my origins, here in Georgia.
Kitten and Buttons
This piece showcases the nicknames that my Nana and Gradaddy used to call my sister and I. I was "Kitten" and my younger sister was "Button" This piece incorporates a childlike whimsy with the swirls around the main piece, the black doodles, and the bow on the kitten's neck.
Sit Still
This painting is a representation of the black hair experience. I included a wide toothed comb and a jar of Shine Jam. At the bottom of the painting I included Duafe, the adinkra symbol for beauty to tie together the representation of the black beauty experience.
Blue Church Shoes
When I would stay the night at my Nana’s house over the weekend, we would always go to Church in the morning. The subject is standing in the grass on a church’s property, showing off her shoes.
