WEST HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
Coursework
To earn a DPS diploma, students must complete:
240 credits in the following required areas:
English Language Arts: 40 credits/4 years
Math: 40 credits/4 years
Science: 30 credits/3 years: 20 credits/2 years must be approved Lab Sciences
(Biology/Chemistry/Earth Science/Physics)
Social Studies: 30 credits/3 years: 5 credits/1 semester must be Civics
Physical Education: 10 credits
Fine Arts: 10 credits
Approved Electives: 80 credits
For the Class of 2027 and beyond, there are course requirements for Financial Literacy, Cultural
Competency, Comprehensive Health, and Holocaust & Genocide Studies
○ 5 credits/1 semester of Personal Finance (Social Studies course) **can be substituted
with 10 credits/1 year of Financial Algebra (Math course)
○ 5 credits/1 semester of Introduction to Ethnic Studies or other approved culturally relevant
elective course
○ 5 credits/1 semester of The History of Power, Conflict and Healing
○ 5 credits/1 semester of Comprehensive Health
ICAP
DPS requires all students to graduate having a plan for after high school that is meaningful to them. Students will continue to work with their counselors, teachers and families to develop, update and complete their personalized Individual Career and Academic Plans (ICAPs), a process which starts as early as the sixth grade.
Through this personalized career and academic planning process, students are empowered to learn about themselves and evaluate their path to career and college including setting and marking progress towards goals, exploration career and college options, planning towards high school graduation, and learning about financial literacy and financial aid opportunities.
Competency
What does it mean to demonstrate competency?
It means being able to show that you’ve learned certain skills, abilities and concepts, and that you are able to apply them in the real world. You not only understand an idea or skill, you are also able to build on what you’ve been taught, and even feel comfortable explaining it to others.
