Unit Title: 6.5 Mary: Faithful Disciple
Unit Overview: This unit looks at Mary as a faithful disciple and model for the Church. Students will explore women of faith and courage, and Mary as a woman of great faith and courage. Students will then review Catholic Marian devotion in art and music.
Unit Title: 6.6 The Bible: Our Sacred Story
Unit Overview: This unit explores the Bible as our Sacred Scriptures. Students review the great story of our tradition: its significant people and events. The unit
also briefly introduces the students to the formation of the Bible.
Unit Title: Personal Identity
Unit Overview: This unit of work will explore the theme of personal identity and how culture influences your personal character and perspective. Students engage emotionally and intellectually with the events, characters, ideas and values presented in the imaginative text, ‘Wild Robot” by Peter Brown. In addition, students will analyse concepts such as narrative, character, point of view and theme in order to plan and create a range of texts.
Unit Title: Exploring grids, Time and Exploring Relationships of 3D Spatial Structure
Unit Overview: Students will be using a grid references system to locate landmarks and describe routes using directional language. They will use 12 hour and 24 hour time and perform calculations associated with time. Finally, students will explore 3D shapes and construct drawings of these shapes.
Unit Title: Thinking life a Scientist
Unit Overview: In this unit, students will review their knowledge of the properties of the different states of matter before studying how mixtures are made and separated. This unit will focus heavily on skills, and will see the students introduced to the components of scientific reports, with students getting the opportunity to put this theory into practice by planning and performing investigations. Students will present their research at a Science Fair.
Unit Title: A Diverse and Connected World - Engaging with Asia
Unit Overview: Students will explore countries of the Asia region and the connections Australia has with other countries across the world. Students learn about the diversity of the world’s people, including the indigenous peoples of other countries. Students will explore and reflect upon similarities, differences and the importance of intercultural understanding.
Unit Title: Personal Power, Dance and Rhythmic Gymnastics
During this unit, students will explore the role of power in relationships by looking at how power can be used responsibly and irresponsibly. They will focus on; bullying / cyberbullying and online safety. Students will be encouraged to recognise abuse and develop personal skills to protect themselves. Within the practical component of the course students will be given opportunities to explore rhythmic, expressive movement and aesthetics through a range of dance styles and sequences in order to develop confidence in refining and applying movement skills. They will be given opportunities to explore some preliminary rhythmic gymnastics skills.
Executive Functioning and Self Management Skills
Executive functioning and self-regulation skills are the mental processes that enable us to plan, focus attention, remember instructions, and juggle multiple tasks successfully.
Self-management is our ability to manage our behaviours, thoughts, and emotions in a conscious and productive way. Self-management means you understand your personal responsibility in different aspects of your life, and you do what you need to fulfil that responsibility.
Students will learn how to better organise their daily schedules with the use of diaries, term planners and ongoing management of their emails and Google Drive.
Better Buddies with Year 1
Better Buddies helps students in their first years of primary school to feel safe, valued and connected to the school community. Students will continue to work with their buddies they formed last year, and participate in a couple of sessions throughout the term with their buddy to form connections with each other.
The program builds strong relationships and research shows children benefit immensely from such peer support initiatives - with younger students feeling safe and cared for and older students feeling valued and respected.
This program will see sessions occur throughout the year in Terms 2, 3 and 4.
Inclusive Community Project
As part of their Inclusive Community Project students will work in groups to create a Cardboard Carnival. They will create a feature e.g. game, animal, venue or model of a ride made out of cardboard, recyclable and old materials.
The purpose of the project is to build community and develop skills in collaboration and creativity.
Junior Years Learning students will be invited to attend the carnival where they will be able to build connections and immerse themselves in an environment of creativity.
