Supporting Attendance
When your Young Person is Absent
There is a section in the student diary for a parent/guardian to sign when a student is returning from absence. The reason for absence should be noted. Student diaries are checked every Monday morning in Well being and the reasons for absence are recorded.
A link for recording student absence online on VsWare will be sent to you at the start of the year. Please complete this to explain why your child is absent.
If absences due to chronic illness are frequent or prolonged; it is useful to have a note from the relevant health professional e.g. GP/Paediatrician/Consultant. This can be kept on the student's file.
Once a student has missed 10 days a letter will be sent home by post advising of this.
At 20 days absence a second letter will be sent home. You may be invited to an in-school meeting to discuss the absences. The school seeks to support you and your young person in any way that we can.
Regardless of the reasons for absence, every school provides a bi annual report of absence to Tusla/TESS in addition to an end of year report where a student has missed in excess of 20 days regardless of the reason for absence.
Every School Day Counts
The school participates in a national attendance drive supported by Tusla/TESS. The importance of attending school every day is emphasised and there is a focus on the impact of missing school days or even partial days. There are some great student prizes to be won and class group privileges to be earned in a bid to promote motivation and embed good attendance patterns.
