Section 2 - Heart & Blood Flow

Prior Knowledge

Students may be familiar with some aspects of the heart, such as pumping blood all around the body, but they may not be familiar with a more detailed structure and function.

Learning Intentions

In this lesson, you will:

  • Explore the structure of the human heart.

  • Describe how the heart functions.

  • Create a blood flow pathway through the human body.

  • Create a model of the human heart (extension activity).

  • Reflect on your own learning.

  • Write a detailed account explaining the flow of blood through the body,

Lesson Recap

In the previous lesson, we explored important concepts associated with blood:

  • Can you list the components (parts) of blood?

  • Can you explain the structure and function of arteries, veins and capillaries?

  • Can you create a model of blood to help visualize the components?

If you answered "YES", you are ready for Lesson 2 - The Heart & Blood Flow!

If not, you can always recap over Lesson 1.

Heart Structure & Function

Could you name the 4 chambers in the heart?

Task 1 - Revise and Summarise

For this task, we are going to revise and summarise our learning of the heart structure and function.

Working in groups (or individually), complete the heart graphic organiser below with your knowledge of the structure and function of the heart.

You can complete this in your copies, or via access to Google Classroom under Task 1.

Heart Organiser

Task 2: Blood Circulation Pathway

From our learning, we know that the heart is a pump which transports blood all around the body. This is called blood circulation.

As the oxygenated blood moves along through the blood vessels, it interacts with other organs and systems in the body. Afterwards, the deoxygenated blood is transferred back to the heart.

For this task, we are going to create a "blood flow map", showing the pathway of blood as it travels throughout the body.

Your pathway should include:

  • the heart

  • the organs/systems that the blood interacts with.

  • Oxygentated blood (in red)

  • Deoxygenated blood (in blue)

You can create this by drawing in your copies, or using the template below. This can be accessed on Google Classroom under Task 2.

Extension Activity:

Create a Heart Model!

For this extension activity, we are going create a model of the heart to aid with our learning of heart structure and function.

Your heart model can be made from any materials, such as plastic bottles, clay, paper, etc.

Here are some examples to help spark your creativity!

Create a heart pumping model using plastic bottles, coloured water and more!

Record a video of you building and explaining your model OR take a photograph of the finished labelled model. Upload your work to Google Classroom under Extension Activity.

Task 4: Student Reflection

Reflect on your learning from this lesson. What have you learned?

  • What keywords can you now explain?

  • What interesting facts did you learn about the heart?

  • Can you describe the structure and function of the heart?

  • Can you explain the flow of blood throughout the body (blood circulation)?

Write your reflections in your copies and/or complete using the Student Reflection document on Google Classroom.

Student Reflection Lesson 2

Homework Task

In this lesson, you demonstrated the flow of blood throughout the human body.

From your learning, write a detailed account of how blood travels through the heart.

  • Include movement of blood through the 4 chambers

  • How blood gains oxygen

  • The organs and systems blood interacts with

  • Why does blood need to travel to these organs and systems

  • The journey blood takes to gain more oxygen.

Write your account in your copies and upload to Google Classroom under Homework Task.
