Description:  Dr. Yuti Huang, Adjunct Faculty Coordinator and Data Administrator., shares her experience as the oldest daughter of a Dominican alumnus, Yuti once pursued excellence in every part of her life and came to Dominican in order to please her father. Through research, teaching, and administration work, she found her own identity and committed to the mission of helping people who have similar struggles.

Melinda Becker expands on her multi-ethnic and interfaith roots as the foundation to becoming a performer and educator.

Description:  Melinda Becker, Adjunct Associate Professor of Music, Mezzo Soprano. Melinda Becker’s multi-ethnic, interfaith roots play important roles in her identity; both as a performer and educator. Through stories and recordings, she will share how her identity has shaped her career as a classically trained musician and educator, performing in eight countries, singing in 10 languages, and cooking New Mexican red chile sauce for Passover. Melinda will explain how she uses music as a way to represent, connect with, and advocate for students at Dominican.

Theresa Arocena shares aspects of her beliefs and impact on identity development.

Description: Theresa Arocena ’20. What does it mean to be a child of the diaspora? How do experiences shape beliefs and behaviors and how does that impact identity? Theresa Arocena shares how she navigates the Asian diaspora, specifically as an immigrant and first generation Filipino American, how that context influences her identity and what that looks like within the United States. Christina Mayes shares her family story and connection to Dominican community.

Description: Christina Mayes, MS ’09, Digital Portfolio Specialist and Integrative Coach. Brown girl, brown girl, what do you see? I see an imposter looking at me. What is “Impostor Syndrome” or rather "Impostor Phenomenon"? Coming from a blended, first-generation, low socio-economic family and public school background, Christina will expand on how she lacked a sense of belonging, her identity as mixed race, and becoming a staff member at our four-year private college. Now in her 15th year at Dominican, Christina will shed light on her crucial life moments of resilience and transformation - it’s time to shift the narrative.

Description: What does it mean to be Black and mixed race? What does it mean to have a chronic mental health condition? George Faithful, Ph.D. has long wrestled with these questions, including how they can relate to each other. Now in his fourth year of teaching religious studies, ethics, and social justice at Dominican, George looks forward to sharing his story and answering questions.
