To be eligible to receive accommodations through Accessibility and Disability Services (ADS), students must have a documented disability, as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act: a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life functions.

This means that if you've been diagnosed with any disability or condition, you may qualify for accommodations. If you haven't been officially diagnosed, you can still meet with the ADS Team to receive support.

Documentation must meet the following guidelines:
Must be completed by a licensed or credentialed examiner (not a family member)
Include the following three pieces of information:
1. A diagnosis/disability
2. Information describing symptoms and their impact on your functioning
3. Recommendations of accommodations and brief explanations about how they would remove barriers to learning.

Reports and assessments created by healthcare providers, psychologists, or an educational system

No. Some students are disabled and do not require accommodations for their courses; they may or may not be registered with ADS. All students who want to register with ADS and receive accommodations must self-identify. It is a student's responsibility to contact ADS, provide appropriate documentation, and meet with the ADS Director and their ADS Coach in a timely manner.

No, you only register once: self-identify, complete the intake form, provide documentation, and meet with the ADS Director. However, each semester you must request that your accommodations are renewed for the new term. Each student will receive an email from their ADS Coach with this information.

No, faculty and staff not associated with ADS do not receive any information about any student's diagnosis. Faculty will only be aware that a student is registered with ADS if they wish to use their approved accommodations in that faculty's class. Students may choose to self-disclose any information they wish, but it is not required (and we do not recommend) that students share their diagnoses with professors. Your meeting with the ADS Director will give you a starting point to explore your eligibility and you can continue to explore your needs and options with your ADS Coach. You can also take these self-assessments to help you determine your strengths and areas for which accommodations may support you.

Please note, though, that accommodations are not retroactive, so being approved in March will have no impact on your grades or assignments from February, last semester, or last year.
