Learn how to register for accommodations at Dominican University of California!
Send a copy of your AVL to each instructor in whose class you plan to use your accommodation(s).
Remember: accommodations are proactive, and not retroactive, so we encourage you to take these steps even if you think you may not use the accommodation(s) for which you have been approved.
Consider your accessibility needs as they relate to your diagnosis/es
You do not need to disclose diagnostic information
Stay focused on your needs. e.g. "Based on my diagnosis, I need to be able to sit near the door during class so that I can take breaks as needed. Would it be okay for me to show you which seat is best for me so that you can hold that space for me even if I'm running late?"
In your initial email to your instructor, request a 1:1 meeting to review your AVL
During this meeting, review each accommodation and talk about your needs so that your instructor can then let you know how they can best meet those needs in the context of your specific class.
Remember: this is a collaborative conversation in which you and your professor are working together to identify and address accessibility
ADS encourages good, clear communication with as much advance warning as possible (sometimes this is 5 minutes, but often can be days, weeks, or even months in advance).
We are committed to supporting students, which means that we collaborate with students, faculty, and staff. Please contact your ADS Coach anytime for guidance, support, or connection.
