Theoretical/project based
This course has a double goal: providing a broad overview on product design as an exchange between users and manufacturers and as a creative process, through the ability to work with “Soft Qualities” languages, with Primary Design theories and CMF (colours, materials, finishing) practice. The supplementary module approach the conception of graphic and photographic aesthetic modules to support the products: images become functional to the diffusion and narration of projects.
The programme grants 12 credits, divided as follows:
PRODUCT DESIGN 1: 8 CFA
VISUAL DESIGN: 4 CFA
Successful students will be able to:
PRODUCT DESIGN 1:
Interpret social and cultural contexts that the product project is targeted at
Understand the complex process of creation, from concept to the final production of products
Understand in a deep and comprehensive way the tools that support the development of product design projects
VISUAL DESIGN:
Acquire deep and comprehensive understanding of graphic representation tools and visual communication codes
Acquire skills and methodologic tools to independently research and develop styling projects
PRODUCT DESIGN 1:
Primary design
CMF (colours, materials, finishing)
Soft Qualities of objects
Product target analysis
Product perception values analysis
Product ergonomics
Conception strategies and morphological consideration linked to usability principles
VISUAL DESIGN:
Design representation tools
Layouts and constituent matrixes
Lettering and typography
Photography
Styling
This is a theoretical/project based course.
Over the course, the students will carry out didactic activities that are functional to achieving the learning goals, that in both modules may include:
Front lectures
Exercises and revisions
Field trips
Development of individual projects
Individual study and research
Use of tutorials, videos or other media tools for detailed study
The didactic modules that make the course will be assessed separately. The final grade will result from the weighted average of all marks. Assessment is based on a check of learnt skills and technical abilities, and may include:
Oral exam
Papers
Complete projects
Assessed revisions or mid-term tests
