ℳathematical Physics is an area of mathematical research closely linked to the history of the Department of Mathematics (DMat) at Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE). The Department originated from the Instituto de Física e Matemática (IFM) at Universidade do Recife, which was created in 1954 under the leadership of prof. Luiz Freire. Among the first publications of the IFM is a book in Mathematical Physics by prof. Freire entitled Bases para uma Axiomática da Termodinâmica. From 1962 to 1974, prof. Ruy Luis Gomes, whose research focused on Mathematical Physics and Analysis, was the leading figure in DMat. It is noteworthy that earlier in his career, prof. Gomes occupied the chair of Mathematical Physics at University of Porto in Portugal (his native country), and had a remarkable life in both science and politics, even running for the presidency of the republic. Since the late 1970's, DMat has been specially active in Celestial Mechanics, with a significant international insertion lead by prof. Hildeberto Cabral during the 1990s and early 2000s whose influence is felt until the present. The I Summer Workshop on Mathematical Physics (I SWMP) at UFPE is an addition to over half a century of efforts to develop Mathematical Physics, and Celestial Mechanics in special, in Northeastern Brazil. The event was part of the 55th Summer Program of the Department of Mathematics, and was held at the auditorium of the Department of Statistics at UFPE from March 11 through 15, 2024. We acknowledge the ample support of the organizers of the 55th Summer Program DMat-UFPE to the realization of the I SWMP.
