Stage 2 (non-research only) Assessment, Reassessment & Progression

Successful completion of Stage 2 to receive the award of Postgraduate Diploma in Collaborative BIM requires collection of 30 European Credit Transfer System credits (3 modules).

The 5-credit elective module, if delivered within the MSc in aBIMM suite, is assessed as Pass/Fail only. If a module is undertaken from another programme, the assessment is undertaken as required by that module and the grade is recorded. However, that grade is not utilised for the awards of the MSc in aBIMM suite (i.e. only the collected 5 credits are utilised).

The exit award at the end of stage 2 is unclassified (i.e. you cannot earn a merit/distinction/2.1 etc.).

However, the modules of Collaborative BIM Process (CBP) and Multidisciplinary Collaboration Project (MCP) are assessed using standard grading, as advised by the ruberics below, and these grades are recorded for future use in the classification of the MSc in aBIMM award.

The classification of the MSc in aBIMM is calculated as:

((CBP*10)+(MCP*15)+(Research Skills*5)+(Capstone Experience*25))/55

Typically, assessment includes multiple items (e.g. work on a model, a technical report, contribution to a forum, etc.) and all items must be attempted for successful completion of the module. This is specified in the Assessment and Module Assessment Thresholds sections of the module descriptor available here.

It is very important that every student makes themselves familiar with the assessment requirements of each module that they undertake.

Penalties for Late Submission

Late submissions are handled through TU Dublin's Personal Circumstances process detailed here.

The implications of late submission without valid reason (i.e. because of reasons detailed as not acceptable on the institute's Personal Circumstance 1 form linked above) are both academic and financial.

Academic

In the elective modules that are pass / fail only, any late submission will result in the module being recorded as Refer in the standard academic session. This will be permanently recorded on your Student Transcript.

In the assessment elements of the CBP and MCP modules, when Personal Circumstances forms have not been used, penalties are applied as a % of the awarded grade as follows:

• Up to 1 week: less 10%

• More than 1 week: maximum grade 35%

The results of each assessment element are combined using the weightings defined in the module descriptors and compensation between elements of a single module applies if the specified thresholds have been met.

If, after combination of elements, the 40% pass threshold has not been met in a module, when your results are issued by the Examinations Office in June / July, you will receive a Supplemental Exam Form and you are required to follow the instructions for registering as detailed at:https://www.tudublinsu.ie/advice/exams/supplementalexams/

Although our programme has no examinations, the repeat assessments are handled under TU Dublin's Supplemental Examination process.

Financial

When registering for supplemental assessment, an appropriate fee must be paid as detailed at:

https://www.tudublinsu.ie/advice/finance/fees/

Reassessment

If you fail to reach the required standard for passing a module, you can repeat that module at the next available sitting (typically the supplemental period in Autumn).

The exception to this in both the CBP and MCP modules. if the referral is deemed by the lecturers to be the result of inadequate participation in the team-based requirements of the module. In these cases, the student is required to internally repeat the module during the next academic session. Internal repeat instruction and forms can be found at the "Student Services Forms" Link HERE

Reassessment after Supplementals

In any module, if a student has not reached the required standard after reassessment during the supplementals, the module must be repeated as an External (only if not dependent on team participation) or Internal repeat as detailed at the "Student Services Forms" Link HERE

Internal repeats require the approval of the School because of the resource implications (i.e. is sufficient space available in the class).

If you register to repeat externally, you must record that registration with smdt.adm@tudublin.ie and contact the associated module lecturer as soon as possible to ensure that sufficient time is available to successfully complete the assessment, which may be different from the assessment that was set at the original sitting and/or supplemental).

Progression

Progression into Stage 3 is available to all students upon successful completion of the appropriate combination of 30 credits of Stage 2 modules.

The Research Skills module of Stage 3 is typically delivered during the second semester of Stage 2 with submission of the Capstone Experience proposal in early June. Students who have successfully passed the Research Skills module will be given priority allocation of places in Stage 3 if availability is limited because few supervisors are available.

Progression if Stage 2 is incomplete

In exceptional circumstances, and only with the approval of the Programme Management, a student may be allowed to progress to stage 3 successfully completing the 30 credits of Stage 2. This decision is made on a case-by-case basis and will require the student to produce appropriate supporting evidence.
