Schools that support family engagement in boosting at-home digital use can expect better outcomes.

8th grade students in Ms. Thomas' ELA class work on an end-of-unit project to build Google Sites to showcase their learning about monsters in Latin American folklore after reading the novel Summer of the Mariposas. Students learned Google Sites for the first time and used it to build multi-page sites with multiple forms of media to showcase their learning.
Guiding Questions:
How are students building their technology knowledge?
How has technology in combination with best practices affected student engagement?
Students at our school are continuously building their technology knowledge in a variety of ways, through multiple outlets, including enrichment!
Our best practices approach includes device care and safety, in which every adult shares responsibility. Our school norms dictate that devices are always seen in cases when not in use, teachers consistently leverage Securly for screen monitoring, and the school IT Manager and VILS Coach regularly assess Securly to ensure students are being safe and responsible with their devices.
Student engagement remains high due to clear in-class expectations set for devices across the board.
On November 5, we held our first in-person Report Card Day since the start of the pandemic. We set a goal of 75% family attendance, and 64% were in attendance.
We leveraged this opportunity of seeing families in person to have them not only conference with teachers about academics, but also:

Visit a technology station to learn about our Discovery Education grant and sign permissions, to have opportunity for Q&A about tech, including how to acquire replacements, to receive a brochure that serves as a one-stop-shop for all things tech at Habans (including directions for accessing tech support online), and to follow our social media accounts.
Also on this day, we were one of the very first sites to offer COVID-19 vaccinations to students ages 5-11! Click here to see a local news story about this special day!
Guiding Questions:
How are families empowered to support their children at home?
Families at our school have access to their students' Clever accounts, SchoolRunner, and Google Classroom. Our school website has a Family Resources section dedicated to providing several helpful tools in multiple languages, including troubleshooting guides and the technology handbook, which help to reinforce care expectations and all things VILS at our school.
How did you support technology literacy in your community? What does technology support look like for your parents?
A plan in the works at our school (and network) can be viewed in the Doc below. The coaches have been working across campuses on a plan to offer Zooms where parents can hop in to learn about different topics, and receive general support, ask questions, etc. Habans is currently in the process of working with a local outside partner on tech-based lessons for families.
In an effort to engage students and their families in productive tech activities over winter break, we shared a promo video on our social media to advertise a great list of Discovery Education activities available to them.
Using the DE data dashboard, we will be able to track engagement.
In February we began a partnership with the Urban League of New Orleans to internally advertise their course offerings to families as well as teachers. We posted signage and flyers in the front office, as well as teacher-facing signage in every work room. On report card day in March, our Tech Table featured this information, plus information on tech-based summer activities available at little to no cost!
We also distributed a flyer to parents as a reminder of LEAP coming up, as well as EOY VILS device turn-in policies.
Lastly, we used this table to help parents (in English and Spanish) to download our school LMS app, SchoolRunner, onto their phones, if they didn't already have it. This allows parents to see student grades, attendance, behavior, and more in real time!
Coming in 2022-2023 school year: as part of our new Immersive Media Lab, we will be hosting community events to introduce families to this incredible space their scholars will use in their learning!
