A strong transformation plan unifies the vision for technology integration and device maintenance with the school improvement plan or goals for the year.
Guiding Questions:
How did you derive your student-centered goals and action steps?
Our PLP goals and action steps are aligned with our school-wide goals for the year. Our VILS PLP goals are only modified from those goals to insure they meaningfully align with technology use and the VILS Outcomes.
How did the teachers, students, and families contribute to your plan?
Because this plan is drawn from our whole school's goals for the year, they are made from input from a variety of sources. Our biggest goals of raising achievement are the most important to every stakeholder and every scholar.
What is your progress on the action steps?
We are in process with all action steps. We are staying the course!
Have you had to modify or change your course of action (based on data)?
We are constantly assessing data as daily practice in our school. Teachers use data to drive instruction, and we, as a school, use interim data, parent survey data, culture and behavioral data, teacher observation data (both from their own leaders and data from the VILS coach) to adjust instruction for both scholars and staff as needed. Data is used to drive coaching of all kinds, and data is used to improve everything we do.
On our third and final Data Day of the year, on 3/25, we not only had our typical data presentations, but there was an emphasis on highlighting teacher strategies for success, and that included those tied to our work with VILS, such as using tech to build engagement, making real-world connections, providing opportunities for productive struggle, and more! At the start of the school year, our Operations Team, which includes both the Student Technology Manager (school-based IT) and the VILS Coach led two sessions with staff to introduce expectations, let new staff learn about VILS, and to support teachers by letting them know where to turn for which kinds of support. The second presentation demonstrated how to set up our in-class technology stations, and how to request IT help for VILS devices. It also re-introduced the coach and the coaching menu, the TIM, and opened the floor for interest for the Teacher Leader Corps.
Guiding Questions:
Does instruction reflect that teachers understand how different uses of technology support teaching and learning goals?
Yes, our teachers and their teams work together to find best practices across content areas. It is regular practice to share templates and models.
How does the campus leadership team model and collaborate with each other to support campus goals?
Yes, principals and district-level leadership collaborate on a constant basis, while the District-Level IT supports School-Level IT and coaching. All 3 coaches across the network are in constant communication and collaboration.
Are technology use policies well documented, understood by both students and teachers, and reinforced?
Yes, our Culture Team is very invested and involved in helping to enforce expectations and cultivate behaviors and attitudes that support device care, digital citizenship, etc. Teachers have a part, too. They check every morning for charged devices and participate in regular device audits.
Have VILS IT management practices been incorporated districtwide? Explain.
There are a few variations in some small procedural details, but largely, all VILS IT is managed the same way. All 3 schools use similar auditing, all use Securly, and all meet regularly with district-wide IT to discuss troubleshooting or general housekeeping.
In-Class Tech Station Posters guide basic troubleshooting, expectations, and show how to request IT support. Every VILS classroom has these posters prominently displayed.
Our mid-year VILS Audits ensure that we are thoroughly supporting instruction by making sure students and teachers have devices that work at their full functionality, and that accessories needed for success are accounted for and replaced as needed in a timely fashion. This is our second year carrying out a mid-year audit, and last year we saw great success in insuring scholars were prepared for their annual LEAP exams, but also that end-of-year repairs and replacements were minimal.
After winter break, Ms. Holloway guided teachers in checking their in-class tech stations to ensure everything is accounted for and in good working order for success!
Coming in the fall semester of 2022: we're getting an Immersive Media Lab! Pictured here are VILS Coach Ms. Theriot and Lab Mentor Ms. Coleman unboxing the first headsets to arrive in preparation of the Lab Institute, held 4/27-4/29.
