BLACK HISTORY MONTH
During the month of October, the whole school will participate in a variety of black history themed activities within different curriculum areas.
We are inviting children and their family members to create a beautiful piece of art, either two or three dimensional, which is inspired by black history. You could represent an important person, place, culture, event, invention or design to name a few suggestions. We will be offering a special black history month award for your participation, simply return your art/project by Friday 18th October and remember to include your name and class on your entry.
There are lots of events and activities planned in the local area for which a schedule can be found on the Black History Haringey 365 Events webpage. We would love to hear all about your participation - please share your good news stories to homelearning@devonshirehill.haringey.sch.uk
SCHOLARSHIP SUCCESS
Haringey Music Service have selected some very talented children from local schools to start a scholarship and form a band. We are so proud to announce that one of the children offered a scholarship is a Year 5 pupil attending Devonshire Hill Primary School.
The talented young musicians recently came together for their first joint rehearsal of the year and will practise together as a band in the run up to their first performance at the Royal Albert Hall in December.
Ivan tells us ‘I was so shocked and excited, a scholarship is so hard to get. There were three of us, we learned new notes and played jazz music. I played the trumpet and there was also a saxophone and a clarinet’
Congratulations to Ivan and his family, we can’t wait to see him perform on the big stage. We look forward to sharing his developments with our community. What a shining example of a Successful Learner.
NATIONAL FITNESS DAY
Children across the school took part in a surprise fitness challenge as part of National Fitness day. Everyone showed their best efforts and came to school dressed for the occasion in their PE kit. Staff and children thoroughly enjoyed getting active to the giant countdown timer and did a fantastic job of keeping up with Mr Slav's challenge which involved a variety of different fitness stretches and movements including star jumps, jumping jacks, and squats. Each challenge lasted a total of ten minutes...what a brilliant energetic day!
Thank you to everyone who sponsored their child to participate in this event, we are counting up the donations and will update everybody as soon as we know the total funds were raised.
JUNIOR JOURNALIST
Former pupil of Devonshire Hill was able to celebrate an incredible achievement with his friends, family and teachers during the Year 6 leavers graduation. As the Headteacher announced that Marco Simms had attended school every single day for seven years, from September 2017 to July 2024, the audience were in awe of his incredible achievement. The celebration came alive with claps and cheers as Marco made his way to the stage to collect his award and a very special prize - a football signed by footballer Mason Mount. Since this fantastic occasion Marco has gone on to share his story with FirstNews and had an article published in the Junior Journalist column. Well done Marco - we wish you all the best at secondary school!
You can read Marco’s article online at: www.read.firstnews.co.uk/2024/09/10/seven-years-of-outstanding-attendance/content.html
GRAND PIANISTS
Our young pianists were back in full swing with their new piano teacher Ann Moloney from Haringey Music Service. It was fantastic to see the budding musicians and new starters finding all the right notes. There is still availability for FREE piano lessons but don’t wait too long to apply, spaces are limited. For more information including eligibility and online application form visit the Haringey Music Service webpage: www.new.haringey.gov.uk/schools-learning/haringey-music-service/book-music-instrument-singing-lessons
Remember you can also book FREE sessions to use the piano at your local library also! This offers the perfect opportunity for your child to practise outside of their lesson and further improve their skills and to proudly showcase their new skills with a family member. STOP THE POP
How willing would you be to Give Up Loving Pop (GULP)? Year 3 have started a four week programme to do just that. In collaboration with Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, the GULP campaign raises awareness to the negative effects that fizzy drinks can have on our health. Over the course of the campaign, children will learn about and discuss dental health, weight gain, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
In their first lesson children were organised into teams of ‘dentists’, ‘sugar’ and ‘water’ and sports cones acting as teeth. Their mission was to discover how sugary drinks can damage our teeth.
This was a fantastic session leading on from our recent ‘water only school’ event whereby local councillors and the Deputy Mayor for Children and Families came along to learn more about our approach as a water only school. Please remember that children must bring a refillable bottle of water to school every day and that only water should be provided in packed lunches. We look forward to updating you with more information about the GULP campaign soon!
SPOOKY AUTUMN DISCO
Children and staff will be celebrating the last day of term with a Spooky Autumn Disco.
Come to school dressed for our Spooky Autumn theme for a £2 donation. Payments can be made via the ParentMail shop or in the donation bucket on the day.
Bring your carved pumpkins or autumn inspired creations such as leaf printing and leaf collage - all creations are welcome and will be rewarded with a special award, please remember to include your child's name and class on their creation.
Details of our spooky themed lunch will follow soon. As always if you are able to offer your support by donating decorations or helping us to decorate please get in touch as soon as possible to offer your much needed support.
