This week in DeSoto ISD was marked by intentional planning, collaboration, and progress toward our district’s priorities.
On Monday, we convened our monthly Board Business Meeting.
I held my monthly meeting with the DeSoto City Manager to review upcoming district and city events and later joined the City Manager and the Chief of Police to discuss options for increasing the number of SROs within the district. Together, we began updating our plan to address the trustee’s concern regarding the presence of a peace officer or armed security at The Meadows.
I met with WRA and Procedeo to finalize meeting structures and next steps now that contracts are complete.
District staff and I reviewed state LASO grant opportunities to evaluate alignment with our district’s strategic priorities and needs.
I met with cross-departmental teams to advance planning for the 2026–2027 enrollment campaign and to coordinate the cadence of districtwide celebration plans in May, including strategies for soliciting donations to offset event costs.
This week I also participated in the first session of the Educate Texas AI Cohort, which includes 29 member organizations—18 K–12 institutions, Dallas College, TEA, and several future-focused partners. The session explored the historical perspective of AI, its applications in education technology, and its long-term potential. Our district began drafting a problem of practice that will guide our engagement with a technical service provider to support our work.
DeSoto ISD launched Wellness Wednesday, beginning with Wealth Wednesday, where staff engaged in a session on budgeting and saving.
I held individual check-ins with team members and attended the TABSE Superintendent Roundtable, which was also focused on AI integration and implications for education.
Alongside Principal Darden and Dr. Peña, I co-facilitated a leadership retreat for the administrative team at DeSoto High School.
Finally, this week marked the first districtwide virtual professional development day, where staff completed the required annual state compliance training.
Thank you for your continued leadership, commitment, and partnership as we advance the work of Constructing Our Future together.
Turning Challenges Into Opportunities-Dr. Rodger's monthly message challenges us to find JOY in everything that we do! Joy is what propels us forward during challenging moments!
Our enrollment and ADA continue to trend upward.

The recent CCMR Economic Mobility Systems monthly meeting was a great success, fostering collaboration among counselors, DHS administrators, the Gear Up team, the RED team, and the Chief Academic Officer. The group engaged in meaningful discussions and made significant progress toward advancing our shared goals, strengthening support systems for economic mobility.
AI Collaborative- Hosted by Community in Schools Foundation
I recently attended a highly valuable AI training session hosted by the Communities in Schools Foundation. The training brought together representatives from multiple districts across the county, providing a great opportunity for collaboration and knowledge sharing. It was an insightful experience that enhanced our understanding of AI applications and how we can leverage them to better support our students and communities.

This targeted approach aims to equip educators with strategies and tools to enhance student writing skills while ensuring alignment with assessment expectations, ultimately supporting improved student performance.
Choice Application Planning/Campaign
The Choice Programming campaign meeting was successfully conducted in collaboration with the Communications team and Superintendent Rodgers, in partnership with the RED team. The meeting fostered productive discussions around strategy, outreach, and implementation to ensure broad community engagement and awareness. With strong leadership and teamwork, the group is eager to begin the application process and advance this important initiative that aims to expand educational opportunities and meet the diverse needs of our students.
Extended PLCS at Frank Moates
We recently hosted extended Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) at Frank Moates to provide focused support for teachers in refining their instructional delivery and lesson execution. These sessions created a collaborative environment where educators could share best practices, analyze student data, and engage in meaningful discussions to strengthen their teaching strategies. By dedicating this time for professional growth, we aim to enhance instructional effectiveness, promote consistency in lesson implementation, and ultimately improve student learning outcomes across classrooms.
CCMR Leadership Team Meeting (Dr. Darden opening meeting)
School Leadership (CONSTRAINT 3)
This week, I engaged in six campus visits and multiple district leadership meetings, all focused on strengthening academics, alignment, and accountability systems.
On Monday and Tuesday, I visited The Meadows twice for a deep dive into STAAR goal setting with our Region 10 consultant and Principal Ms. Hicks. On Monday, Dr. Strickland also joined us, adding valuable perspective to the discussion. Together we engaged in rich dialogue around Domain 3 of the state accountability system and its direct implications for instructional planning and delivery.
On Tuesday morning, I joined Ms. Lunkin, our Region 10 consultant, and the DHS assistant principals for the AP Academy, where APs engaged in classroom walks to calibrate evidence for T-TESS. Later that day, I visited Katherine Johnson to observe and support the same calibration work with their team. In both settings, I stressed the importance of interrater reliability so leaders across the district remain tightly aligned — essential for instructional quality and the Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA) alignment of classroom instruction across all campus administrators.
To build on this alignment, I partnered with Chief McCloud’s team to consolidate Eduphoria’s multiple walkthrough forms into one official district walkthrough form and a summative T-TESS form. This will ensure coherence and consistency across every campus.
Beyond campus visits, I participated in Dr. Rodgers’ weekly Executive Leadership Meeting, where we reviewed PEIMS coding practices to ensure accurate capture of data tied to accountability and funding.
I also attended the CCMR Leadership Meeting, where updates were provided alongside our Economic Mobility Systems partners. Dr. Darden did an excellent job opening the meeting and remaining present throughout the dialogue. This intentional conversation reflected the true partnership between Teaching & Learning, campus leadership, and external partners to align our efforts and create stronger pathways for students’ postsecondary readiness.
Following that, I attended the faculty meeting at Cockrell Hill, where Ms. Lowe announced her retirement. Together with Dr. Davison, we gathered staff feedback to help shape the principal profile, answered questions, and provided clarity on next steps for the transition.
Finally, I supported DeSoto High School in the realignment and calibration of SPED systems. With many moving parts, this reset required clarity of roles and responsibilities, tighter systems of accountability, and deeper engagement with teachers, staff, students, and parents. Dr. Darden is reinforcing this work by convening a half-day Administrator Retreat on Friday to reflect on the first six weeks, celebrate wins, identify areas of growth, and reset for greater coherence and instructional impact.
The impact of this work is evident:
Teachers are receiving sharper, calibrated feedback to strengthen instruction.
Students benefit from clearer systems, higher expectations, and consistent supports.
Staff and parents are engaged in transparent dialogue that informs leadership decisions.
This work is important to the Board because it demonstrates leaders actively using evidence, reflection, and accountability to drive continuous improvement. It exemplifies PRIDE through Purpose in aligning to Board Goals, Results in stronger instructional, SPED, and CCMR systems, Integrity in transparent engagement, Determination to recalibrate after the first six weeks, and Excellence in keeping student outcomes at the forefront.
