This week in DeSoto ISD was one of strategic planning, collaboration, and community engagement as we continue to advance the district’s mission and strengthen operational excellence across all areas.
Bond Planning and Facilities Alignment
I held the first joint planning meeting with Procedeo and WRA to formally introduce members of each team and establish the framework for our collaborative work. During the meeting, we reviewed key information discussed during the 2025 Bond planning sessions, developed the outline for the upcoming Board Bond Workshop, and identified next steps required to ensure alignment, transparency, and readiness as project work begins.
Strategic Planning and Governance
This week, I facilitated small-group meetings with Trustees to review the near-final draft of the district’s Strategic Plan, as well as clarify roles and responsibilities between administrative and board services to ensure streamlined governance practices. Additionally, I conducted individual meetings with Trustee Banks and Trustee Mitchell to discuss district updates and address specific topics of interest.
Community and Economic Engagement
DeSoto ISD was proudly represented at the Dallas County Economic Mobility Summit, where I attended alongside Trustee Mitchell, Vice President Durham, and members of the senior leadership team. The summit provided valuable insight into workforce pipelines, regional collaboration, and strategies to increase educational and economic mobility for our students and families. DeSoto ISD Trustees were recognized for their commitment to utilizing data and engaging the community to develop new board goals and guardrails. DeSoto ISD was also recognized for the significant increase in college, career and military readiness.
I also participated in the Monthly Mayor’s Stakeholder Breakfast and held my regular one-on-one meeting with Mayor Proctor to discuss ongoing city–district partnerships. In addition, I met with the Glen Heights Chief of Police to begin developing aligned protocols for School Resource Officers (SROs) to ensure consistent safety standards across municipalities.
Campus and Community Engagement
I met with the Cockrell Hill Elementary staff to address concerns raised in a letter sent to Trustees and the Superintendent. The discussion was productive and focused on fostering shared understanding, transparency, and collaboration in the best interest of the campus community.
I also met with parents of high school students enrolled in specialized special education units to listen to their concerns and work collaboratively on strategies to enhance the learning experience and ensure individualized support aligned with student needs.
Academic Innovation and STEM Expansion
This week, I presented updates on the district’s STEM Implementation Plan to the Texas Instruments Foundation, highlighting how DeSoto ISD is utilizing funds generously provided through Educate Texas. The presentation underscored our progress in expanding hands-on STEM opportunities, implementing Project Lead the Way, and cultivating early exposure to high-demand career pathways.
Organizational Health and Fiscal Stewardship
The district conducted its first-quarter Faculty and Staff Advisory Committee meeting, providing a forum for dialogue on climate, culture, and continuous improvement. I also convened a cross-functional team to review overtime data and begin developing strategies for improved utilization, approval, and monitoring to ensure fiscal responsibility and cost savings.
Celebrating Eagle Excellence
I joined the community in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, recognizing the rich cultural diversity that strengthens our district. Additionally, I attended the i-Ready Celebration at Woodridge Academy, where the campus was honored for achieving the highest usage and accuracy for the month of September — a testament to the hard work of our students and staff.
Finally, I continued to participate in our daily PRIDE, Chiefs, and Administrative Services team huddles, which serve as vital opportunities to maintain focus, alignment, and momentum throughout the organization.
Thank you for your continued partnership and commitment to the success of DeSoto ISD. Together, we are constructing the future and setting the standard for excellence across academics, arts, and athletics.
The strategic priorities presentation was shared during our small group workshops this week.
Our enrollment increased by 19 students this week, and our ADA increased by .2%.

Teachers of the Year Celebrated World Teacher's Day at City Council Meeting
School Leadership (CONSTRAINT 3)
This week, campus and district leaders were focused on ensuring readiness for upcoming district benchmark assessments, strengthening distributive leadership structures, and keeping school culture positive through intentional recognition and student engagement initiatives.
At Moates Elementary, I joined Principal Paraham to review campus trends, conduct walkthroughs, and support distributive leadership moves with grade-level leaders. Our conversation emphasized benchmark readiness, ensuring testing accommodations are in place, and leveraging the campus STAAR goal to drive planning and data-informed instruction. Teachers are receiving clear direction on how to prioritize instructional time, and students benefit from stronger alignment of support.
At McCowan Middle School, leadership work centered on distributive leadership as well, with department leads engaged in supporting school priorities. We also reviewed benchmark preparation, accommodations, and celebrated student and teacher achievements. Notably, McCowan was represented at the City Council’s World Teachers’ Day proclamation, where last year’s Teachers of the Year and our scholar ambassador were recognized, a proud moment for our district.
On Tuesday, I joined Dr. Darden, SPED case managers, and the Special Education team at DeSoto High School to prioritize completion of compliance components. This work ensures students with special needs are supported on time and in line with TEA requirements. That same day, I facilitated a working lunch with all principals, focused on disaggregating data as it pertains to the state accountability system. We also launched the “Get Your Glow Back” Fall Break Challenge, which motivates students to complete i-Ready lessons during the nine-day break. Students meeting the goal of 20 minutes per content (Reading and Math) daily with 85% accuracy will be rewarded with a glow bracelet dance party when they return.
On Wednesday, I participated in the weekly Executive Leadership Training, where Ms. Lunkin delivered an excellent professional learning session equipping us with tools to enhance the design and delivery of presentations and professional learning experiences. Additionally, I joined the NAVEX Lunch & Learn with campus leaders, which focused on ensuring that all campus and district leaders fully understand DeSoto ISD’s reporting protocols and remain in compliance with both TEA requirements and the law.
On Thursday, Ms. Hicks and I participated in a Region 10 training on instructional leadership. Together, we began planning professional learning for her November 7th session with staff, centered on strengthening observation and feedback practices as well as reinforcing PLC structures.
Through this week’s work, leaders are reinforcing a culture of distributed ownership, accountability, and celebration.
This work matters to the Board because it directly connects to our student achievement goals and compliance commitments. It demonstrates P.R.I.D.E.—Purpose in goal-setting, Results through data-informed practice, Integrity in compliance, Determination to sustain learning momentum, and Excellence in celebrating our staff and students.

We met with Legal and Health Services to review current legislation and its impact on district operations.
Two key contracts were developed, along with an agreement process that will be presented to the Regulation Committee for review.
Board Services and Administrative Services hosted office hours for department leads to collaboratively review agenda items. These sessions, along with follow-up conversations with Dr. Rodgers, led to improvements in our coversheet format.
Ms. Smith from Board Services and I attended the TASB Legislative Update 126 seminar to stay informed on emerging policy changes.
We proudly hosted the first Faculty and Staff Advisory Committee (FSAC) meeting of the year, welcoming a dynamic new group of educators. Their energy, thoughtful questions, and commitment to excellence set a strong tone for the year ahead. Our next FSAC meeting is scheduled for November 13, 2025, where we’ll begin a deep dive into organizational improvement.
I also presented at three small-group board workshops focused on strategic priorities and departmental updates.
Finally, we celebrated 159 staff shout-outs submitted for this week’s P.R.I.D.E. Huddles—an incredible testament to the positive culture we’re building together! We now have received over 1200 employee-to-employee shoutouts!
Please see the board agenda packet for the October 20, 2025 board meeting.
This week, TASB hosted a webinar focused on the upcoming Policy Update 126. One of the most impactful insights shared was the importance of intentionally reviewing the legal-annotated document, the updated regulations, and the policy updates in tandem. This approach ensures a comprehensive understanding as we prepare to implement both the policy and regulations stemming from the 89th Legislative Session.
Ahead of the official rollout later this month, participants received valuable resources to support the process of standing up all applicable regulations. We encourage everyone to review these materials to stay aligned and informed.
