Click on each dropdown menu below to learn more about some of the key features of being in AVID 9.
Students enrolled in the AVID elective are expected to be model students at all times!
This means that AVID Scholars conduct themselves in a respectful and responsible way.
AVID Scholars practice the skills they learn in AVID and use them in all of their classes. Scholars are representative of themselves, the AVID program, and La Quinta High School.
When in doubt, remember the Blackhawk Way! Blackhawks are principled, balanced, open-minded, and caring.
AVID students have the unique opportunity to build relational capacity with their classmates and peers.
Relational capacity is the way students interact with each other and build and sustain relationships. This happens in the form of team building, collaborative work, and trust building. AVID is a family!
In short -- this means there will be times in class where we play games, get to know each other, and work on creating a family-like environment!
There will be several opportunities in the AVID 9 class to refine and strengthen reading and writing skills. For example, students will engage in:
The Mandala Project, which culminates in an essay, where students explore the values in their lives.
The RIMS AVID Write-Off is a writing competition between AVID students in Riverside, Inyo, Mono, and San Bernardino counties. Students are given a prompt and complete a timed write after preparing for several weeks.
All students in AVID 9 will read The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens to examine their own life and learn how to live with purpose and determination.
AVID Scholars will have the opportunity to explore colleges and universities across the country at various points while in the AVID program.
AVID 9 will utilize the Campus Explorer YouTube series to explore California colleges. There will also be opportunities for college field trips.
AVID Scholars will become very comfortable with public speaking!
40% of weekly class time is spent in tutorial groups where students are practicing and refining their public speaking skills in small group environments.
There will also be time for whole-class presentations, Socratic Seminars, and our annual college fair.
While enrolled in AVID 9, LQ AVID Scholars will embark on a journey of self-reflection and growth by reading Sean Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. In this book, Scholars will discover the 7 habits that they must develop to become, what Covey calls, "highly effective." These habits are:
"Be Proactive: I Am the Force"
"Begin with the End in Mind: Control Your Own Destiny or Someone Else Will"
"Put First Things First: Will and Won't Power"
"Think Win-Win: Life is an All-You-Can-Eat Buffet"
"Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood"
"Synergize: The 'High' Way"
"Sharpen the Saw: It's 'Me Time'"
With this book in hand, 9th-grade AVID Scholars will explore their lives more deeply to create meaningful connections and goals!
The AVID 9 Culminating Project is a campus-wide College Fair. Students spend several weeks researching college life and host a college fair in the gymnasium to LQ students, staff, faculty, and administration. Take a look!
