CHOOSING THE RIGHT COURSE AND THE RIGHT UNIVERSITY

If you decide university is the right path for you, there’s still a lot of research to do to find the right University for YOU.

Research Online

The UCAS search tool at search.ucas.com can be used to find undergraduate courses at universities, colleges, and conservatoires. Search results will show entry requirements, fees information and details of when to apply.

Get more in-depth details about their facilities and courses, and explore the campus with their virtual tour which can be found at www.ucas.com/virtual-tours.

Prospectus Library

In the Sixth Form common room we have a prospectus library and you  are welcome  to borrow these.

UCAS Exhibitions

These give you a chance to meet universities, colleges and other course providers to find out more about them.  These exhibitions are free. To find out more and book a place www.ucas.com/exhibitions

Summer Schools                                In Sixth form we encourage students to attend Summer schools at local Universities and further afield.  This gives students a snapshot of University life including sample lectures, meeting other students and staff and exploring the facilities.

University and College Open Days

Take the opportunity to look around, meet staff and students, and see if you would be happy studying there. Details can be found at  www.ucas.com/opendays and we will also put posters up in the common room and Sixth Form dining room of any forthcoming events. If you wish to visit a University Open Day, you will be given an authorised absence.

Please note: Due to covid 19 all open days are currently virtual and a number of activities may not be possible.

Taster Courses

are tailored to specific courses or subjects and often include lectures and hands-on workshops, to give you a feel of what it would be like to study that particular course.  www.ucas.com/taster-courses.

School organises a trip to “Ambition Nottingham” each year

Experience Days

Many universities offer Experience Days.  We will take all our students to the Derby University Experience Day to give you a really good insight into what it is like to go to University.

WHAT IS UCAS?

The Universities Central Admissions System (UCAS) is a charity that processes applications to study full-time courses at universities and colleges in the UK. They provide a wide range of valuable information and services for applicants, their parents, and teachers. You can use www.ucas.com to find out how to get started, research your options, make your application, and track its progress.

THE UCAS APPLICATIONS

At Derby Moor we will give you lots of support to fill in your UCAS application.  An hour each week will be dedicated to this within tutor time as well as support from other staff within the Sixth Form.  We would encourage you to look at this short video ww.ucas.com/fillinginyourapplication.

TYPES OF OFFER

A conditional offer means you need to meet some conditions – usually exam results – before they secure the place.

An unconditional offer means you are guaranteed a place, regardless of what grades you get.

An unsuccessful application means the university has decided not to offer you a place. If all universities send a rejection, you then have the option of going through Extra and /or Clearing to find an alternative course.

A withdrawn application means the choice has been withdrawn either by you, or by the university. If the university has done this, they’ll let you know why.

Once you’ve had decisions from all your choices, you can confirm your Firm and Insurance choice.

 REPLYING TO OFFERS

When you have received decisions from all your choices, you’ll need to reply to any offers you have.  At Derby Moor we will guide you through this process.

What replies can you make?

You can accept an offer as your Firm or Insurance choice.

Firm choice - Your first choice

For a conditional offer, you will be guaranteed a place on the course if you meet the conditions.

For an unconditional offer, the place is yours.

Insurance choice -The second choice, should you not get the grades needed for your first choice.

You can find more information and a video here  www.ucas.com/replies.
