Because it's fun! There's a wide variety of reasons why our volunteers choose to help. Some want to socialize, have fun, to make new friends, test leadership skills, learn something new, share a skill/talent, to have an impact, to get to know & feel a part of the community, and/or all of the above! Whatever the reason you choose to volunteer, we appreciate you!
Anything you volunteer for during school hours requires a background clearance. They're good for 2 years and allow you access to field trips, volunteer in classrooms, and for anything the PTA hosts. For more specifics see the background clearance page. Once you have your clearance, you can sign up for any volunteer opportunities during school hours! You're welcome to sign up for any and all opportunities outside of school hours without a clearance.
No worries, at all! Reach out! Let us know how you'd like to help, and what you'd like to do- and we'll work to put your skills to tasks you could do at home. You're welcome to contact a specific committee chair, or anyone on the executive committee, we're all happy to help!
Have to? No, not at all! You're welcome to volunteer for events and things we do even if you're not a PTA member. We'd love to have everyone involved! There are, however, a few positions that are restricted to PTA Members; these include handling money, committee positions, and executive board member positions.
Yes! We encourage all parents, guardians, and community members to come to meetings. We discuss PTA events and the Principal Chavez provides a school update. You can learn a lot at a PTA meeting! Meetings are generally held in the evenings. Check the calendar for the next one. Please join us!
No! We promise we will not assign you a job, but you might want one after you hear the exciting things that we’re doing and how much of an impact you can make on the school. We also want to hear voices from all grades, new and old families…everyone!
Your PTA membership dues are crucial to maintaining quality educational and enrichment programs at Dennis Chavez. PTA dues help fund STEAM lab purchases, cultural events, field trips, classroom materials, and many other worthwhile projects. To join the PTA or renew your dues, click here.
Why, thanks, yes, it is a lot of work, but even more fun! It's the best way to meet and make friends with other parents. The easiest way to get involved is to ask someone who's already involved. You can always contact our PTA board members or any of the Committee Chairs. We can find something for every skill and time commitment. PTA jobs range from large to small, with consistent commitments to seasonal commitments, and everything in between.
Sure! Teachers love gifts! Some class parents do a class-wide collection for a gift. In some classes small groups of families go in together, some families go it alone, and some just say, "Enjoy your time away from us!" Whatever you do, know that our teachers are grateful...but that it won't change your child’s grades! Check out Staff Favorite Things for the teacher or staff member you wish to buy for.
The Lost and Found is in the middle of the hallway across from the Staff Lounge, and it is usually overflowing! Your child can check the Lost and Found during lunch, or recess (with the teacher's permission), and take the jacket back to class with them. Or, you can stop by and check the Lost and Found yourself, just sign in at the front office first! There are sweaters, jackets, books, lunch boxes, water bottles and more, so if your child is missing something, you should absolutely check it out! Unclaimed items are periodically donated throughout the year.
Each class has an opportunity to wander through the Book Fair and students make lists of books (and prices) to bring home. Younger students have adult volunteers to help them. Whether you have to buy all of them depends on who you ask--certainly, your child will say, "Yes!". Please know that the Book Fair is big fundraiser for the DCES Library, so while you might be tempted to just buy the books on Amazon, please consider buying straight from the Book Fair! During the Book Fair, there will also be a link to shop online. Funds raised from both Book Fairs go directly to our school Library! You may send in cash, but we strongly recommend setting up a digital e-wallet through Scholastic. Credit cards/tap wallets are also accepted onsite. Of course, you also have the option of coming to the Fair yourself, either during the day, after school, or at Family Night. For more specific information, check out the Book Fair page for details, or email the Library Liaison Committee Chair at library@dennischavezpta.com
