Objective: The objective of this assignment is to reflect on how personal identity intersects with barriers and challenges faced in outdoor spaces. Students will engage with this theme and present their insights using creative mediums of their choice.
Begin by exploring the concept of how personal identity intersects with barriers and challenges present in outdoor spaces. Be sure to review the self-paced module, as it will serve as the basis for this project. The Week 3 Materials will also be helpful for this project.
For this assignment, you can choose a medium that aligns with your strengths and preferences. You can choose from the following options or propose an alternative with your instructor's approval:
Written Assignment: Create a 500-800 word written piece.
Presentation or Video: Create a presentation or a video (approximately 5 minutes) that visually and/or audibly communicates your reflections on the topic. You can use slides, images, and your voice to convey your thoughts.
Art Project: Create an art project that represents your understanding. This could be a drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, or any other form of visual art.
Other Creative Medium: If you have another creative idea for expressing your thoughts (e.g., a podcast episode, a poem, a song, a short story, a comic strip), feel free to propose it to your instructor.
***Presentation and Explanation: If you choose a medium other than a written or video assignment, include a 250-word explanation (or a 2-minute video/audio explanation) of your project. Explain how your chosen medium represents your thoughts on acknowledging bias and equitable outdoor spaces.
Personal Reflection: Reflect on different aspects of your social identities. Are there any identities that have more significance to you than others? Why or why not?
Intersectionality: While intersectionality is not a new concept, the term has come into the media more recently. Thinking back to some of the issues or challenges you have seen play out in your organization and community, how can you use the concepts of intersectionality to explore and explain some of the root causes?
Addressing Barriers: Explore strategies for promoting inclusivity and dismantling barriers in outdoor spaces. Share some ideas you learned from the module. What skills & knowledge do you have that can help address some of the barriers discussed? What could you learn or share with others to make this happen?
