Topic 3 : Greeting People You Know 

There are 2 different forms of greeting people whom you already know.

1. Formal Greeting 

2. Informal Greeting

The formal Greeting often use with senior or high executive people to show respect to them.

Mr. Jack : Good morning Mr. Tee.

Mr. Tee  :  Good morning Mr. Jack How are you today? 

Mr. Jack : Fine, thank you. And how are you? /And you? 

Mr. Tee  :  Fine, thank you.

 

Susan : Good evening, Laura. How are you?

Laura : Good evening, Susan. Not so well. I have a fever. 

Susan : Take care of yourself. You have to see the doctor.

Laura : Yes, I will.

Normally, we simply say some words about weather after greeting people. For example:

Mr. Paul   : Good morning. Mrs. Mali

Mrs. Mali : Good morning. Mr. Paul. It a lovely day today, isn’t it? 

Mr. Paul   : Yes, it is.


Example 4

Mr.George : Good afternoon, Mr. Ken.

Mr.Ken       : Good afternoon, Mr. George. It isn’t very nice today, is it? 

Mr. George : No, it’s terrible.

NOTE



For example:    You say: It’s lovely day, isn’t it? People answer: Yes, it is.

You say: It isn’t nice and sunny today, is it? People answer No, it isn’t.

Present Simple

         The simple present tense is used to discuss an action in the present or situation that happens regularly. For example:

Informal Greeting

Informal greeting, normally use with friends or people we are familiar with. 

We say Hi or Hello, and follow by a common question. For example:

Responding to Informal Greeting. The people you talk to may say: 

Sam : Hello, Liz. How’s life?

Liz   : All right, thank you. What’s new? 

Sam : Nothing special.


Jai     : Hi! How are things?

Porn : Very well indeed, How about you? 

Jai     : Not so bad.

Generally, we ask about people’s health after greeting. For example:
