Deer Lakes has the opportunity to consult with the Highmark Caring Place to provide a support group within our school for students who have had someone close to them die.
The group will be a peer support group led by trained co-facilitators from our building and the Highmark Caring Place. While the purpose of the group is not to provide therapy or counseling, giving students the opportunity to talk about their feelings of grief with others who are going through similar experiences and can be therapeutic. The students will also have the opportunity to share memories of the person who died with one another. Participation is completely voluntary and the students share only what they are comfortable talking about.
The group will meet approximately 6-8 times over the course of a few months. All meetings will be held during the school day. While the meetings are held during the school day, every effort will be made to minimize disruption to your child’s academic work.
The Highmark Caring Place has been providing support to grieving children and families since 1997 in their four facilities located across Pennsylvania. This program comes to our school at no cost. You can read more about the Highmark Caring Place by visiting their website. Learn about the family program opporunties at their Warrendale and Pittsburgh locations as well.
In order for your child to participate in the program, families will fill out an application form and permission slip provided by the school counselor. Your child will not be able to participate unless a signed permission form is received.
