Teachers who work for the Douglas County School District need to make “every reasonable effort to ensure that students use District IT appropriately and responsibly” (DCSD, 2018, para. 3), including proper use of copyrighted content when generating original works spanning from essays, to projects, to student websites. Furthermore, ISTE student standard 2c states, “Students demonstrate an understanding of and respect for the rights and obligations of using and sharing intellectual property” (ISTE, 2018, para 3).

Copyright and fair use in schools is a very complex issue, and a proper understanding and application thereof is an important transferable skill for workforce readiness. To successfully teach ethical and appropriate use of online content when creating original works, I have created a Just-in-Time (JiT) Google Slides lesson and resource that will help you understand more about this very important issue.
