Will I automatically get my first choices?
The simple answer is no.
• Sometimes we have to limit the number of students on a particular subject/course for safety reasons or because of equipment needed. It would be wrong to cram 30+ students into a Drama or IT room for example. It is also not possible for us to offer a course if only a few students make this choice.
• We may have to reconsider offering a course if we cannot provide the best possible staffing. Sometimes staffing in a school can change for a whole variety of reasons and we have to respond to such circumstances in the way that benefits the maximum number of students possible.
• We have to take into consideration your performance skills so far – the levels you achieve, your attendance, effort and conduct. Some subjects may demand a level of knowledge, skills and understanding that may not be appropriate for you. That is why we have a range of pathways to give access to courses that are suitable for you.
You will be asked to make a RESERVE choice on your Options Form and we will take this into consideration if need be to ensure the best possible fit. Remember this is about securing your future.
Can I change my mind in the future?
We will allow a student to change courses once the outcomes of the GCSE exams are revealed or where necessary invite students to select different options if the results are not at the required entry level for a course. This can be a disappointing outcome if your results are not what you expect. That is why you MUST put careful thought into your choices in the first place. Once all of the groups are organised, class sizes are balanced and courses have started it becomes very, very difficult to make changes – organising personalised timetables for all students in Year 12 is a massive logistical task and you must play your part in making sure that you take this process seriously and get things right from the outset. Under NO circumstance would we allow a student to change courses after the last Friday before half term in Year 12 – by then it is very definitely too late! Any changes must be agreed by The Sixth Form Team.
Why do I have to do Additional Learning?
When you leave us at 18 you will ideally be about to begin either a course at university, an apprenticeship or be going into some form of employment. Additional Learning is an opportunity for you to do a course that will allow you to develop another skill. Developing skills and being prepared to 'go the extra mile' show an admissions tutor or a potential employer that you stand out and have something different to offer. You see, the more you get involved the more interesting you become to people who could be important to your future!
Why can I not use my Mobile outside of the 6th Form Wing?
We want to treat you as young adults so unlike elsewhere in the school you can use your phones in your designated 6th form area. However, elsewhere we ask you in the same way that we ask staff that you act as an effective role model by not using your phone in front of the rest of the school in places where you are visible. This is an important part of being a DCHS 6th Former and demonstrates to us your ability to work with us. The BYOD scheme ensures that if you need technological access you can have it through a laptop in more visible spaces.
