During the pandemic, like many other schools, we were faced with the challenge of engaging our students in our Outreach program 'JUMP' (Josephites Undertaking Mission Projects) and YMCC group (Youth Ministry at MacKillop Catholic College). JUMP and YMCC joined forces and it is out of this climate that ARK (Acts of Random Kindness) was born.
The biblical story of Noah’s Ark reminds us that Noah and his family were protected within the ark, and it was the ark that carried them safely through the floods. The intention for ARK is that it would also carry our community through the storm of COVID-19. Students of MCC have been encouraged and challenged to be the hands and feet of Jesus through acts of service and kindness.
There have been a number of ARKs on offer to encourage students to reflect and pray, such as the creation of a sacred space within their homes during Home Based Learning. Students were encouraged to reflect on their choice of items and use it to pray. Numerous ANZAC Day ARKs were also completed such as Anzac wreaths and the baking of Anzac cookies. During Laudato Si’ Week, students completed ARKs that linked specifically to the environment. Some students created their own gardens and others got creative by creating information posters or upcycling household items. Although we have all returned to school full-time, we believe that our local and school community can still benefit from acts of random kindness.
