 2)     Lecture by Ms. Neha Chauhan'

Date: 7th February, 2023

The Economy of India has shown high resilience to the ongoing global recessionary trends due to COVID restrictions in China and disruptions in supply-chain worldwide. Our nation has emerged as the 5th largest economy on the globe.

With the introduction of the Union Budget for 2023 by Honourable Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, there has been a new wave of hope among financial institutions. However, many questions linger in the mind of an average citizen - What will be the long-term impacts? Will this prevent a recession? Will it reduce unemployment?

To answer all these questions, and more, the Department of Economics, in collaboration with ECOZEST under the aegis of IQAC, Deshbandhu College, University of Delhi, has organized second insightful lecture as part of the iconic “Know you Economy” series. The topic – “State of the Economy: Union Budget 2023”.

Speaker: Ms Neha Chauhan (Deputy Director, IES 2014)

Date: 7th February 2023

Time: 11 AM Onwards

Venue: Conference Hall, Science Block

 3)     Lecture by Dr Rajan Sudesh Ratna'

Date: 15th February, 2023

The Department of Economics, Deshbandhu College collaborated with Ecozest, the Economics society and under the aegis of IQAC, hosted a seminar on the topic 'Impact of Covid on Regional and Global Supply Chains.' This lecture was the third in the "Know your Economy" series.

The event took place on 15th February 2023. Dr Rajan Sudesh Ratna, deputy head and senior economic affairs officer of UNESCAP South and South-West Asia office, was the guest of honour and speaker for the event. The event examined the upcoming policies that will form to tackle the pre-existing gaps in the supply chain which the pandemic brought to the notice of our legislatures.

Following the felicitations, our honourable vice principal, Dr Kamal Kumar Gupta, addressed the audience. Our IQAC coordinator, Dr Aditya Saxena, shared the importance of the economy advancing with unity. Next, Dr Sangita Singh, the teacher-in-charge of the Economics department, gave a precise summary of the overall effect COVID-19 had on the supply chains of our country.

Dr Rajan Sudesh Ratna started his lecture by discussing the economic decline the pandemic had caused to investment flows and labour migration for the whole region after an economically successful period from 2008 to 2018. India, on the other hand, is on a solid recovery path because the focus throughout the pandemic was on vaccination and technological development for increased accessibility through government apps.

Besides the coronavirus pandemic, the global supply chains had to adapt to the hurdles of the Russia-Ukraine war, the Sri Lanka financial crisis and the rise in devastating natural calamities evident through the flood in Pakistan and the earthquake in Turkey. The supply chains within our country remained comparatively intact during the pandemic due to the surge in e-commerce and the government's decision to avoid the further burden of taxes during a recession and restrict exports promoting Aatma Nirbhar Bharat, a self-reliant nation.

The forthcoming changes in economic policies would focus on supporting exports by expanding manufacturing, transport, intra-government relations and logistics. Incentives are already in place to convert raw and intermediate goods to high-volume products through manufacturing which reap more profit in export. The major challenge we currently face is high transaction costs within our country due to a lack of infrastructure, so much so that it is costlier to transport within our country on wheels than to send a ship to Europe.Dr Rajan Sudesh Ratna encourages domestic reforms with far-sightedness assuring a sustainable future for our country.

The speaker initiated an informative Q&A session with the audience members. Afterwards, Niyati, the President of Ecozest, thanked the speaker and the audience for attending the session. The event was a success, with significantly high participation from students.
