A FOCUS ON MENTORSHIP

Two mentorship programs were created in fall 2021 aimed to fill recognized gaps, offer support, provide skill building opportunities, foster connection and encourage career development.

Msaada Mentorship Program was developed by staff from the Matthews Center for Career Development and Office of Alumni and Family Engagement in collaboration with Anissa Patton ‘91. Msaada, which in Kiswahili means to be of help, is designed for Black women-identifying students at Davidson College by matching them with Black alumnae based upon the student’s field of interest, professional aspirations, and career goals. All students are welcome to inquire about the benefits of this program.

51 mentorship relationships were created

15 NEW students, from various majors and disciplines, joined Msaada

57 Black alumna, representing the classes of 1983 to 2020, registered to serve as a mentor and support of the program

The Matthews Center for Career Development received their second year of funding from the North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities grant to facilitate a minority male mentorship program, HD: Mentorship that Hits Different. HD supports male-identifying students of color at Davidson College.  All students are welcome to inquire about the benefits of this program. During the academic year, students participated in a 2nd annual Barbershop Talk event where 15 new students signed up to be a part of HD and over 60 students received a free haircut, catered meal and community. Students were joined by staff members from Technology & Innovation, Davidson College’s Campus Police Department, Residence Life and Athletics.

Throughout the spring semester, HD students participated in “Let’s Talk About It…” group mentorship sessions. The group mentorship sessions were facilitated by staff and faculty members. To wrap up the academic year, HD students were invited to participate in the Inaugural iBelong Minority Male Mentorship Conference sponsored by North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities. Four students and two staff members traveled to Livingstone College in Salisbury, NC to participate in the two day conference. Students participated in masterful networking, professional etiquette, soft skills, and mental health and mindfulness workshops.

Pre-Health Mentorship Program

In January of 2023, the Pre-Health Mentorship Program was created to match pre-health students (i.e., those who are pre-med, pre-dental, pre-vet, pre-pharmacy, pre-physical therapy, pre-physician assistant, pre-nursing) with accomplished alumni in that same healthcare profession. Both mentees and mentors agreed to partner for at least 1 year.  Mentors provided students with career guidance, insight into the profession, networking and educational opportunities, as well as professional encouragement.

In AY 22-23, this mentorship program was rolled out to underrepresented students who were in their junior or senior year, and was jointly co-sponsored by the Matthews Center for Career Development in partnership with the Pre-Medicine and Allied Health Professions Program and the Council of Alumni Healthcare Professionals. It is our hope that the relationship for the 13 students who participated this past year will continue for many years into the future.
