Tips
We suggest you review our list and then customize this to make your own. If possible, speak with a previous participant from your home school for guidance on necessities and things that you can live without, buy after arrival, or find at the Free Market Thrift Store.
đź’Ś Hinman Mail đź’Ś
If you would like to have some things with you on campus that you don't want to pack and don't want to wait for (bedding, etc.) we suggest you order these online and have them mailed in advance to your Hinman mail address.
All students will receive a Hinman address where you can have mail shipped and pick it up from the mail room on campus after you arrive. Your mailing address will be available to you in the message you receive about your housing assignment.
Hinman will email you when your package has been received. Hinman only stores packages for five days before returning the package to sender, so you will need to pick up your package within that window of time.
Airline Bag Restrictions
Most airlines restrict passengers to 2 checked bags, with a weight of 50 pounds per bag, and charge high fees for bags that exceed the allowance.Â
Check with your airline to find out their baggage policies so you are prepared financially and logistically.
Overnight Kits
Pack a little overnight kit including a toothbrush, a change of clothes, and essential (small) toiletries in your carry-on bag. This can be helpful to have if your luggage is delayed.
Carry all necessary medications, in their original packaging, in your carry-on bag, ideally with a doctor’s note.
Weather and Climate
Try to prepare for a variety of weather conditions (dress in layers) and be sure you can comfortably carry everything you pack. Â
Check out the Life in Hanover page for an overview on Hanover's climate.
Capsule Wardrobe
Consider packing darker solids because you can mix, and match and they hide stains.Â
Lightweight, wrinkle-proof clothing will save you time and space in your luggage. Bring clothes you can layer.Â
