Hi, I am Katie Cavolo. I’ve lived in Darien my entire life with my mom, dad, and two younger brothers who are twins. I love to read and write and have been dancing since I was two; I am currently a member of the Senior Company at the Darien Arts Center. I want to be an author, so I will be writing a short novel for my IDEA project. I really enjoy history as well, so there will definitely be strong historical elements weaved throughout my story.
As I said above I am writing a short book. The basis of the book is that it is set in a medieval, high fantasy world meaning there are kingdoms, kings, queens, knights, war, death, and epicness. There are four POV characters and the story will end with the beginning of a war. A goal that I have is for one of the messages of the story to be that the reader doesn't need to know what happens during the war, the story can end with out true resolution because war will always have the same outcomes: death, destruction, and rebirth. Those three motifs will be weaved throughout the story, hopefully giving the reader a thorough analysis of them. This book is not promoting pacifism per se; many awful events will happen throughout the story and my main goal is that they raise the question "What is the worst thing in the world?". I don't know the answer to that yet but I'm hoping it will come to me during the process of writing this story. As I mentioned above I really love history, so I will definitely try to incorporate events in the story that parallel events in world history.
Tessa Repsher is a local writer who has published two novels in the mystery genre. Her knowledge about the writing process and story development will be invaluable for my project.
Summary: I have decided to allow additional plots and final editing to be completed after May 4th. This means that the completed book will not be ready for Achiever's Night, but the first few chapters will be.
have 90% of my manuscript done and the first few chapters ready to be read
Summary: I have had my first mentor meeting and wrote more than my goal of having ten pages of solid writing.
My third mini goal is to have written half of the story. The way I have decided to go about this is by writing two (out of the four POV characters) chapter's in their entirety and then writing the other two POV character's chapters afterwards. I have decided to write the story this way because I have found that focusing on one character at a time helps with the story's continuity and also with the indepth development of each character.
Summary: For my first WIPP I now have a mentor, I fully committed myself to this specific story, and I started planning. This is not a lot of work, however, I had originally planned for this story to be three books long, the first book being prewar, the second during the war, the third being the tail end of the war and the aftermath of war. I was and still am very attached to the charcter development that would have occured during the last two books, so it took some serious consideration for me to choose to alter the story to fit the time constraints I am under with the due date of this project being May 3rd.
My second mini goal will spand the month of December and the very beginning of January, ending on January 6th. December is my busiest month, so I am not assigning myself too much work to complete for this mini goal. I want to:
Finish preliminary planning
Write the ending (no more than a page)
Write the middle action (an outline of it)
Write the beginning and keep writing
To synthesize, I want to flush out what the basis of the plot will be and then just start writing. I'm going to aim to have ten pages written.
