Hey, my name’s Aadya! Like everyone else, I’m a freshman at DHS. My current favorite subject is probably biology- it’s just cool to see and learn more about what makes life exist. I love the idea of flying in general, which is what got me into the hobby of flying drones. I think it’s amazing how they’re able to fly using just spinning rotors, and the perspective they give is unmatched. Most of my other hobbies involve content creation of some sort- I make music, edit/take photos and videos, and do graphic design. I also enjoy creative writing, meeting my friends, and discussions about technology.
My project this year largely combines two of my favorite things- flying and editing. I'm focusing on how drones can elevate filmmaking and how video editing can make that footage really shine. I will also focus on how drones work, and how they can be used to assist people from all walks of life.
I have a separate website for extra content too! Here's the link!
Here's the recorded presentation of my project!
This class was one of my favorite all year and was definitely worth choosing. I learned so much this year- most importantly, I learned the importance of time management and organization, which I'll carry forward into future presentations and projects. I also learned a good amount about myself as well- through trial and error, I was eventually able to figure out which strategies work and which strategies don't work when it comes to personally tackling a long-term project. I also obviously learned a lot about my topic, and I plan to further develop and improve some of the skills I picked up this year in the future. I'm walking away from this year with a better understanding of myself, drones, and larger projects, which is something I think no other class can do.
To future 9th graders, my advice would be to pick a topic that really interests you over one that seems like it would benefit you academically or be more acceptable/normal. Don't be afraid to pick a more "out there" topic- this class is a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in something you feel passionate about and I guarantee you that you won't regret it. If there's something you've always wanted to do but it seems out of reach or too difficult, this is your time to do it! As long as you choose something you feel connected to and are willing to put a full year into, your project will turn out great. I would also really recommend managing your time and organizing yourself with things like self-made due dates or a calendar, as it'll help break down what at times seems like a monumental task into simpler bite-sized pieces. As someone who brushed off this idea until the year was almost over, it would have been really helpful to have done this from the beginning!
For my first mini-goal, I researched how drones work/fly, and began learning how to use Adobe Premiere Pro as an editing software. Before I started learning how to edit, I edited a short video with the drone footage I had already gathered as a baseline. I also started researching some of the technical specifications of my drone, and why they're important.
As part of my mini-goals, I intend to make a video with footage I've gathered to see how I've improved and showcase what I learned in that mini-goal. Here's the first one!
My next mini-goal is to research all the ways people utilize drones, and what kinds of drones are used in certain situations. (What types of drones are considered good for filming? What types are good for industrial use? etc.) Since I'll also be gathering footage with my drone throughout the entire year, that'll be a big focus as well. Additionally, I'll look into and possibly enroll in some video editing courses.
Also, I plan on launching a separate website for my videos and other things associated with my project, which I'm aiming to launch soon.
Update: Website launched! Find it at the top of this page.
Over the past few months, I continued to get footage while I researched the applications of drones and the situations they could be used in order to get a better understanding of drones. As I started working, I decided to add on to the final goal as well- instead of just having drone shots, I'm going to give it more of a story and include clips talking about changes I made throughout the year and giving background information for the drone clips.
