Hi my name is Ronan Mirsky. I am a freshman at DHS. I love to ski and I have skied at a variety of mountains in both the east and the west. I have been skiing since I was six. Skiing is my favorite thing to do in the winter, and I am looking to translate that into other seasons and move skiing on to other terrains as well.
My project is going to be based around skiing on different surfaces. I plan to research what skis are made of and the effect the different materials have on how you ski. I thought this would be a good idea because I want to be able to ski all year round. I will make a pamphlet about my research and some models of how it will work.
Mr Lui is a teacher at DHS. He teaches Physics and ASR. ASR is a similar class to the IDEA Program, in a way that they both have students pick a topic to dive deeper into and really focus on that one topic for a year. Mr Lui is a great mentor for my project, because he knows a lot about the science behind what I need to do.
Over the course of this school year, I was lucky enough to be apart of the Achievers' Program. I learned a lot about how friction, inertia, surface area, gravity, and momentum all affect skiing and more specifically grass skiing. The most surprising thing about this project for me was that there was already a grass ski out there. Looking back, I wish I had printed out at least some of the parts of the ski. I also wish I had started my trifold earlier because I spent the whole weekend before Achievers' Night working on it.
For my third mini goal I found a very different type of ski called a grass ski, I learned and made new changes and ideas for my ski. I also met with my mentor and we talked about making a brake in the ski, along with a feature in which you can lock the ski to hike up the hill.
My next mini goal is to research the physics and dimensions needed for my ski.
For my first mini goal I researched different types of skis and the materials used to make skis. I learned the wood and metal skis are stiffer. I also learned that carbon skis are lighter and have more spring. Some skis use multiple materials while others use just one.
My next goal is to research different terrains that could be skied on.
