Hi! I’m Alex, a freshman here at DHS. I love all things art, music and writing and hope to use that in my project. I also love dancing and spending time with my friends. When I’m not at school you can usually find me in bed listening to music and writing poetry. My favorite subject in school is IDEA but I also love my Mandarin Chinese class.
I recently came out as nonbinary and have been transitioning ever since. I hope to bring my love of art and my experience with gender together for my project.

For my project I'm using other people's and my own experience with gender and translating it into a multimedia art exhibition with writing, painting, and dance. Through this I hope to educate the people in this community about gender related issues and explore other people's experiences to gain perspective.
Katie LeBesco, Ph.D., is Professor of Communication and Media Arts and Associate Vice President for Strategic Initiatives at Marymount Manhattan College in New York City. Dr. LeBesco is author of Revolting Bodies: The Struggle to Redefine Fat Identity, co-author of Culinary Capital, and co-editor of The Bloomsbury Handbook of Food and Popular Culture, Bodies Out of Bounds: Fatness and Transgression, Edible Ideologies: Representing Food and Meaning, and The Drag King Anthology, as well as dozens of book chapters and journal articles. Dr. LeBesco's work was nominated for a Lambda Literary Award and received an honorable mention for the Sylvia Rivera Award in Transgender Studies.
With her help I hope to have a professional outlook on gender issues outside of my own.
This project helped me learn more about myself and my own gender and experiences as well as better time managment and learning to create better work over time instead of shoving it all together at the last second. I've always had a problem with procrastiation so having this project be over such a long time almost made me do it more. I found myself writing poems in my free time and actively seeking out news songs or stories about the topic. I also improved my skills when it comes to working independently and was able to create a sizable amount of work over the year.
If I had anything to say to rising 9th grade Idea students it would be to pick a project you have a personal connection to. For me it really made all the difference. I was able to learn more about myself and my friends. I made friends all across the world, connecting with people in my community. I picked a project that I could talk about for hours and I've done just that. I picked a project that I was confident in so I could stretch my limits inside a safe space. I picked something I cared about and knew I would still care about for the whole year, and that's what made this project so great for me.
For my thrid mini-goal I started to create. I currently have a large variety of poem, stories (in various stages of work), and some paintings, with plans for some photography. Right now I just have to complete the work that I've started to be on track to finish for Achivers' Night.
I have to finish the work that I've started and go in and edit my stories and put together a website to display my work.
For my second mini goal I focused on deciding what I wanted to talk about. I gathered insight based on my and others experiences and put together a planning document with ideas for short stories and art pieces. My plan is to include photography, sculpture, poetry, prose, drawing, and painting to help describe the feelings of gender dysphoria and gender euphoria, gender envy, the societal pressures of gender, the interpersonal struggles and discrimination trans people face, and the feeling of gender itself.
For my next mini goal I want to start creating. There will be some things that will have to wait for better weather (Photography) and materials I need to gather but now is the time where I unleash my creative spirt.
For my first mini goal I wanted to get a better understanding of gender outside my own point of view. I put out a survey asking people about their connections and struggles with gender. I then picked some of those people to answer more in depth questions. By getting an understanding out side my own head I will now be able to more accuratly protray the feelings and struggles that come along with gender.
As I continue with my project I now need to plan what I'll be doing. This will include getting materials, developing plots and characters for my short stories, thinking about themes for paintings and poems, basically doing everything I need so by the next mini goal I can immediately start creating. This works as a mid point goal inbetween the creative part and the research part.
