To reach out to a range of established networks to develop insight into the current context, challenges facing those in data roles across the education sector with a focus on gathering information about;
the purpose and scope for data use in functions across schools, colleges and MATs - education and business functions;
the size, structure and roles within teams that support data functions within schools, colleges and MATs
the qualifications, experience and knowledge of staff in data roles at all levels of organisation
the current CPD offer accessed by staff in data roles across the sector and its perceived effectiveness
the current career progression paths within the sector for those in data roles
the priorities and concerns of school and trust leaders when investing in data skills for professional development

To provide baseline assessments by which to monitor the impact of future phases and development work. By understanding the professional development needs of data professionals in schools this theme will support the DfE in designing and promoting data driven decision making to support the effective allocation of future resources.
The development of best practice case studies will support sector leaders to understand ‘what good looks like’ with regards professional development and career pathways for those in data roles thus supporting them with their staff recruitment and retention strategies.
