Welcome back, Scroll readers, to the year 2022! New year, new you, new me, and lots of new content. Last year was a rough year with many ups and downs. So the start of this year must happen on a good note. Let us begin with a few good news stories around the world to kick off the first month of 2022, which will hopefully bring more enjoyable content and quality time to you.
The first good news of the year is that the Canadian Lawmakers have voted to ban conversion therapy in the country. They passed a “motion banning the discredited practice of 'conversion therapy', in a rare show of unanimity in the country’s parliament” according to The Guardian. A surprise motion by the opposition Conservatives to fast-track the legislation prompted applause in the House. The bill is now going to go to the Senate for a vote before it becomes law. After the vote was taken in the House of Commons, a handful of liberal cabinet ministers hugged their Conservative colleagues. “I dream of the day when LGBTQ issues are no longer political footballs. And we are one day closer to that future,” said Liberal MP Randy Boissonnault. This statement is true because Canada took a huge step towards the future, where LGTBQ members can live their lives without having the burden and abuse of conversion therapy placed on them. This ban on conversion therapy has been passed after two failed attempts and this movement has saved many from depression, anxiety, drug use, homelessness, and suicide. Way to go, Canada!
For the second good news, animal lovers will be extremely happy to know that Spain has approached a new law in which animals will be recognized as sentient beings. Due to this legislation, “pets and wild species will no longer be considered 'objects' in the Spanish Civil Code,” according to El Pais. Animals will have a different legal standing than an inanimate object and animals will no longer be able to be seized, abandoned, mistreated, or separated from their owners in the situation of a divorce, without having their well-being and protection taken into account. “We are the only species that recognized the suffering of others and as such we have an obligation to prevent that suffering,” said Guillermo Díaz, Ciudadanos lawmaker. This statement made by Díaz shows that the human race must stop the abuse and suffering of another species when we can. This is exactly what Spain did and they should be applauded for this big step towards preventing animal abuse!
The third good news comes from the world’s newest republic, Barbados, which has officially removed Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state. After 396 years, the Caribbean island of Barbados was freed from the British monarchy. Barbados further on swore in their first president who is also a woman. “Guests in the square applauded as Dame Sandra Mason was sworn in as president by the chief justice and took the oath of allegiance to her country” per The Guardian. Hundreds of people lining Chamberlain Bridge cheered and the iconic Barbadian singer Rihanna also attended the ceremony and was declared a “national hero,” according to The Guardian. This creation of a republic has brought a new beginning to Barbados by severing their ties with the Queen and British Rule. Their step towards independence by swearing in a female Barbadian president is a drastic step towards new changes and being an example to all the females of taking power and leading with grace and equality.
For the last good news of this month, football and sports lovers will be pleased by the heartwarming news that the California School for the Deaf football team has an undefeated season. The school was established 68 years ago in Riverside, California, and for the first time, the football team had an undefeated season. The players communicate through the use of ASL with each other and their coaches. “Deaf people can do anything. We’re not this stereotype that's out there,” Wide receiver Jory Valencia agrees, adding that “We’re showing the world we can play,” according to The Week. The California School for the Deaf-- Riverside continues to break stereotypes and give opportunities and bright beginnings for many deaf students attending there. It is a great start to their football season! Good luck, team!
