Why are they important? What is their significance in journalism?

Opinion articles are a great way to reflect student voice on The Scroll and within our community. While not representative of the entire student body, they allow valuable perspective/empirical insight into the minds of individual students.

Editorial content contains important statistics and evidence from reliable sources usually backing up a claim or the stance of a writer. This come in the form of an opinionated voice, and/or support towards one side of an argument. They are a way for journalists to express their personal thoughts on topics or events side-by-side with facts. These articles usually have argumentative and persuasive elements. A lot of them offer new viewpoints and often controversial topics that can encourage a more broad perspective on topics.

What are some real-life news examples of opinion and editorial articles?

Many newspapers, such as The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal contain opinion and editorial sections! By separating informative and opinionated styles of writing, they can publish both without confusing readers on which is which.
