#1. Closing multiple tabs in Safari

Closing multiple tabs at once:

If you hold down the tabs icon in the upper right corner in Safari you will get a prompt to allow you to close all of the tabs that are open at once.

This makes it very easy to close all of them and is a fairly quick process.

Setting Safari to automatically close all tabs:

  1. To configure this setting go into Settings > Safari.

  2. On the right side select Close Tabs.

  3. In the next window you can select Manually, After One Day, After One Week or After One Month.

We recommend that your students should have this set to "After One Week". (This is an iOS 13 feature)

How to take a screenshot on an iPad:

You can either take a screenshot of the screen you are viewing or the full page of a website.

  1. Press and hold the Top button when viewing the screen you want to capture, then tap the Home button and release both

  2. In the screenshot window you can select “screen” or full page

  3. Click done

  4. Save as pdf

  5. Select where you would like to save the document. (D62 recommends saving the documents to iCloud Drive)

#3. Keyboard options

-Pull down on the letter to activate the greyed out character above it.

Floating Keyboard:

  1. Press and hold Keyboard icon.

  2. While holding keyboard icon move finger upward and select Floating from menu.

Slide to Type:

This function only works when Floating keyboard is enabled. You will move finger over individual letters, that will spell out the word you are attempting to type.

Dock Keyboard:

  1. Place finger near horizontal line at bottom of floating keyboard.

  2. While holding that area of the keyboard. Move to the bottom center of the screen to dock keyboard.

Note: following instructions above will also allow you to move floating keyboard and be placed at a location of your choosing.

Split Keyboard:

  1. Press and hold Keyboard icon.

  2. While holding keyboard icon move finger upward and select Split from menu.

Merge Keyboard:

  1. Press and hold Keyboard icon.

  2. While holding keyboard icon move finger upward select Dock and Merge.

If you select Merge. Follow the steps below in order to have keyboard docked.

  1. Press and hold Keyboard icon.

  2. While holding keyboard icon move finger upward select Merge.

  3. While holding keyboard icon move finger upward select Dock.

Troubleshooting Tip:

There have been instances when a student’s keyboard on the iPad does not remain aligned with the bottom of the screen. The keyboard is slightly raised or can be at the top of the screen. Below will be instructions on how to get that keyboard docked again:

  1. Press and hold Keyboard icon.

  2. While holding keyboard icon move finger upward select Dock.

#4. Adding Google Drive to the Files app

You can connect your Google Drive to the Files app on your iPad to access and save files from other apps.

To do this, follow the steps below.

1. Login to the Google Drive app with your district account.

2. Once logged in, Files will automatically make Drive available in the app. This may take a couple minutes to automatically show up.

3. Select Browse at the bottom of the screen.

4. You can toggle Drive on and off in Files by selecting the three dots next to Browse and choosing Edit.

5. Once you are in edit mode you will see a toggle button next to Google Drive where you can hide or unhide it from Files.

#5. Clock Timer

Using the Clock app, you can set a timer that when it runs out it will take the student out of the app they are in and back to the lock screen.

To do this follow the steps below:

1. Open the Clock app and select Timer in the bottom right corner of the screen.

2. Input the amount of time you want the timer to run for.

3. Below that you will see an option that says "When Timer Ends". By default this will be set to Radar. Select this and scroll all the way down to Stop Playing.

4. Select Stop Playing and press Set in the upper right corner of the menu.

Once you start the timer it will send the students back to the lock screen when it runs out.

#6. Scanning Documents using Files

How to save scanned documents from files to Google Drive

1. Open the Files app on your home screen

2. Click on locations on the top left

3. Make sure the google drive location is highlighted

4. Click on the three dots on the top left

5. Click Scan Documents

6. Place the camera over the document and click the photo

7. The scanned document will be saved to the Google Drive directly

8. Rename it by pressing and holding on to the document’s thumbnail

1. Double click the home button on the iPad to reveal all of the apps that are open.

2. Swipe the app up to close it.

3. Re-open the app.

1. To delete the app press and hold the app until the options come up. Once they come up select Delete App.

2. Open the Catalogue app and search for the app you just deleted from the list of apps that are available.

3. Select install. (It may say that the app is still installed but you can still select the Installed button and will still have the option to install it again.)

4. Depending on the size of the app it may take a couple minutes to reinstall.

  1. Tap on settings icon.

  2. Tap on Control Center.

  3. Tap on Customize Controls.

  4. Under more controls, Tap on the + Screen Recording.

  1. Pull down on the top right corner of the screen. (Control Center)

  2. Tap on Screen Recording Icon. (when pressed a three second timer starts)

Note: By default when a Screen Recording is started the built-in microphone does not record audio. To enable audio capture follow the steps outlined below. This can be done before or during a Screen Recording.

  1. Pull down on the top right corner of the screen. (Control Center)

  2. Press and hold the Screen Recording Icon.

  3. Tap on Microphone Icon.

When active, it will say Microphone on and the icon will be red. To turn this off repeat the steps after tapping on the microphone icon it will change to off.

Stop Screen Recording

  1. Tap on Screen Recording Icon in the top right corner of screen.

  2. Tap on Stop.


#9. External Keyboard Options

There are multiple keyboard shortcuts that you can use to perform commands.

Most keyboard shortcuts use the Command ⌘ key, like a Mac. If you're more familiar with a PC keyboard, the Command ⌘ key does the same thing as the Control key on a PC.

-To see a list of shortcuts you can use with an app, press and hold the Command ⌘ key when you're using the app or on the Home screen.


#10. Split View for Multitasking

Split View is an amazing tool that allows you to multitask and split the space of the display between two apps.

Split View:

  1. Open desired application.

  2. Swipe up from bottom of display to view Dock.

  3. Tap and hold the secondary app you want in split view, While holding the app drag it off the dock to the left or right of the display.

Adjust Split View size:

  1. Hold the grey divider that is on the center of the display, and move left or right to the size of your choosing.

Exit Split View:

  1. Hold the grey divider that is on the center of the display, and move left or right over the app you want to close.

Additionally, you can use Split View within the same app. For example having safari open and then dragging Safari again to the side of display. This will allow you to have Split View with two Safari windows.

Please Note: any secondary app you want to use for Split View must already be placed on the dock.

#11. App Slide Over for Multitasking

Opening slide over apps:

  1. Pull up your dock from the bottom of the screen

  2. Press and hold the app you want to slide over.

  3. Once the app pops out, drag it from the dock to on top of your screen and let go.

  4. The app will now be floating on top of your main app.

  5. You can stack multiple floating apps on top of each other by repeating the above steps.

Cycling through the slide over apps:

  1. At the bottom of the slide over apps list you will see a grey divider located in the center.

  2. Hold and swipe up from the grey divider to reveal all of the apps you have open.

  3. Select the app you want to use when it is in this mode by tapping on it.

Closing all of the slide over apps:

  1. Hold and swipe up from the center grey divider located on the slide over apps list.

  2. When it's in this mode, select the app and swipe it up to close it out.

  3. If you have multiple slide over apps open you will need to repeat these steps for each one when it's in this mode.

Multitasking with app slide over: with iPadOS you can now have two screens of the same app open using split screen and app slide over.

  1. Open an app that supports slide over

  2. Drag from the bottom of the screen up to reveal your dock.

  3. Long press on the same app you already have open until it pops out. Then drag it on top of your screen and let go.

You now have two screens of the same app open.

  • By pressing and holding the small grey divider at the top of the app you are using with slide over, you can move it from side to side.

  2. Tap the Aa icon on the left-hand side of the URL/search bar

  3. Tap Show Reader View (will be grayed out when not available)

  4. Alternately, to use Reader View immediately, long press on the Aa icon

Adding Notes to your Control Center:

  1. Open the Settings app and select Control Center on the left side.

  2. Select Customize Controls on the right side.

  3. Scroll down to the yellow Notes app and select the green + icon next to it.

  4. The Notes app will now be listed in your Include section.

  5. You can press and hold the three lines within the Notes app line to organize it in how you want it ordered within your included Control Center list.

Using the Notes shortcut in your Control Center:

  1. From the lock screen or home screen swipe down from the top right corner of the screen to reveal the Control Center.

  2. Select the Notes icon.

  3. Once selected the Notes app will open with the newly created note.

#14. Smart Search in Safari

How to easily find a specific word or phrase on a webpage in Safari:

  1. Tap the Share button, then tap Find on Page.

  2. Enter the word or phrase in the search field.

  3. Tap the Search Down button to find other instances.

Type the word on the search bar on top and select the word underneath find on page heading.

How to turn your iPad keyboard into a trackpad

  1. On your iPad, press down the spacebar on the keyboard as you normally would to trigger a 3D Touch feature.

  2. Notice that the characters on the keys fade away, indicating that your keyboard is now in touchpad mode.

  3. Move your finger around the touchpad, and you'll see that the cursor moves accordingly.

  4. Stop when the cursor is in the right spot, such as in the middle of a misspelled word that you need to correct.

  5. Lift your finger, and the touchpad changes back to a keyboard.

  6. Now you can start typing again to fix the mistake.

#16. How to use Markup with the Logitech Crayon

Markup can be an essential tool in the classroom. PDF assignments that would normally be printed out can be shared via Airdrop with students. Once shared, students can use their Crayon to annotate, highlight, and fill out sections of that PDF.

  1. Open the Files app.

  2. Tap on the PDF file (Location of PDF must be in iCloud Drive or On My iPad).

  3. With Crayon, begin to annotate or highlight PDF document on iPad.

  4. When complete tap on the Markup icon.

How to Fill out PDF Handouts with the Logitech Crayon:

  1. Open the Files app.

  2. Tap on the PDF file (Location of PDF must be in iCloud Drive or On My iPad).

  3. With the Crayon, begin to write or highlight the PDF document on the iPad.

  4. When complete, tap on the Markup icon.

Note: You can also tap on the Markup icon to start annotating as seen in the video. When Markup is enabled, the Markup icon will be colored in blue. When the icon is white Markup is not active and you can scroll through the pages in the PDF document.

Creating Folders and Organizing Apps:

  1. Press and hold the app you would like to put into a folder. After a few seconds of holding the app you will get a set of options to choose from.

  2. Select Edit Home Screen

  3. All of the apps will start shaking which means you can move them around or add them to new folders. Select the app you want to put into a new folder and drag it on top of another app you also want in that new folder.

  4. A new folder will come up with those two apps added to it. It will automatically generate a name for the folder based off of the type of apps you added to it. You can tap in the top bar where the name is located and rename it to whatever you like.

  5. Once you are done naming the folder you can add more apps to it by tapping the space outside of the folder to get back to the rest of the apps on your home screen. Repeat the same process to add more apps.

  6. You can organize the apps in the folder by selecting them and dragging them around.

  7. Once you are done organizing and adding apps to the folder press the Home button on your iPad to get out of this mode.

  1. Press and hold the app in the Dock. After a few seconds of holding the app you will get a set of options to choose from.

  2. Select Edit Home Screen.

  3. All of the apps will start shaking which means you can move them around. Move apps you would like onto the Dock or remove apps you do not want on the Dock.

  4. Once you are done moving apps press the Home button on your iPad to get out of this mode.

  1. Unlock your device and swipe down from the middle of the Home screen.

  2. The virtual keyboard will appear allowing you to search all apps installed on your device.

  3. Tap the search field, then enter what you’re looking for.

  2. Select "I'm a Student"

  3. Select the blue Google / Email Sign In button at the bottom of the screen.

  5. Select Continue when the "Seesaw" Wants to Use google.com" to Sign in pop-up.

  6. Select your district Google account or login to your account in the next pop-up window.

How to turn off Block pop-ups in Safari

By default, block pop-ups are turned on in Safari. Some of the programs your students use like McGraw Hill or MyOn have activities that open up in a pop-up. If this setting is turned on, the students won't be able to load their activities and lessons.

  1. Open the Settings app.

  2. On the left side, scroll down and select Safari.

  3. On the right side, scroll down until you find Block Pop-ups and toggle it off.

  1. Open the Safari app

  2. Go to D62's custom Zoom web portal at https://d62-org.zoom.us

  3. Select blue Sign in button.

  4. Select Profile on the lefthand menu.

  5. Click on Edit to the right of the student's name.

  6. Delete the contents in the Last Name field.

  7. Select the blue Save Changes button.

Deleting the app:

  1. Press and hold the app until a set of options come up.

  2. Select Delete App


Reinstalling the App:

  1. Select the Catalog app from the iPad's home screen. If you are having trouble finding it, swipe down from the middle of the screen to bring up the search function.

  2. Find the app from the list and select the green Installed button next to it.

  3. A pop-up will come up, select Install. A green banner will come up at the bottom of the screen to let you know that your request has been received.

  4. You can now leave the Catalog app and go back to the iPad's home screen. The app should reinstall within 5-10 minutes.

  1. Open the Settings app.

  2. Select General from the menu on the left side.

  3. Select Software Update from the menu on the right side. (If you don't see an update available then you have already updated to the most current version of iPadOS.)

  4. Select the blue Download and Install link.

  5. Select the blue Agree link in the upper right corner of the terms and conditions window.

  6. When the iPadOS is done downloading the update select the blue Install Now button.

Creating a class in Apple Classroom

  1. Open the Apple Classroom app

  2. Select the + icon

  3. Add your class name

  4. For location, select Des Plaines School District 62

  5. Select the icon and color you want to use for the class and then select the blue Done button in the upper right corner of the pop-up window.

Adding a student to your Apple Classroom class

  1. Select the class you want to add your students to.

  2. Select the three dots in the upper right corner and select Add Students from the list.

  3. Select all of the students you want to add to your class. (Note: you can search for your students by name or email address in the search bar.)

  4. When all of your students have been selected press the Add button in the upper right corner.


Apple Classroom Troubleshooting Guide:

  • If you added a student and the student's iPad is showing as offline, have the student sign out of their Apple ID, restart the iPad and then sign back in. You may need to restart your Apple Classroom class as well.

  • If having the student sign out and sign back into their Apple ID doesn't work, select the student's icon that is offline in your class and then select the Connect link within the available options. It will be the first option in the top row. Once selected, the student's iPad will start ringing and a notification will drop down on their iPad asking for them to join your class. Once they select that notification it will force the connection.

  • If you don't have an option to create a class, your Add Students option is greyed out or if your student isn't in the list when creating your class please email service@d62.org. There may be a problem with your Apple ID.

  1. Open the Notes App on your iPad

  2. Select the markup tool

  3. Select the correct pen

  4. Draw and hold for a couple of seconds at the end so it can sharpen the edges and perfect the shape desired.

  5. Use the highlighting pen shown to select the desired shape and place it anywhere you’d like it to be.


Please Note: You are able to use the Shape Recognition Tool in Notes and in Screenshots/PDF files. Using the markup tool it can recognize any shape drawn on either or. (circles, triangles, clouds, stars, ect..)

#29. Scribble Feature

How to enter text with Scribble feature

Write with Logitech Crayon/Apple Pencil in any text field, and Scribble automatically converts your handwriting into typed text. Scribble even works when your handwriting extends beyond the edges of the text field.

Additionally, you can use the Scribble feature in the notes app to take notes:

  1. In Notes, in the Markup toolbar, tap the Handwriting tool (to the left of the pen).

  2. Write with Logitech Crayon/Apple Pencil, and Scribble automatically converts your handwriting into typed text.

Please note: You can enable/disable the Scribble feature on the iPad by going into Settings > Apple Pencil > Scribble

Convert as you go

  1. Choose the pen tool from the upper right corner.

  2. Select the pen option with an “A” on it and your handwriting will convert automatically as you go.

  1. Double tap words you want to select.

  2. Move sliders to include all text to be converted.

  3. Tap the selected words.

  4. In the menu that appears tap Copy as Text.

  5. Paste the text elsewhere in that document or somewhere else.

  1. Press and hold the app that you wish to start with until a pop up menu appears

  2. Select Edit Home Screen

  3. While holding down with one finger on the app select the rest of the apps you would like to move around with your other hand

  4. Drag and drop the apps into the desired spot

  1. Press and hold the app that you wish to start with until a pop up menu appears

  2. Select Edit Home Screen

  3. While holding with one finger on the app select the rest of the apps you wish to have in a folder with the exception of one.

  4. Drag and hold into the last app you wish to have in the folder until a gray border appears behind them

  5. Rename your folder into the desired name

  6. Select Done when finished

Note: You can follow the same process to remove apps from a folder

  1. To pin a note, swipe right over the note, then release. Or go to the note, tap the More button , then tap the Pin button .

  2. To unpin a note, swipe right over the note again.




#33. Send a Note as a Copy

1. Open the note you want to share. Tap the (more) icon.

2. Tap Send a Copy, then choose how you would like to send your note.

You can choose to share it through mail, AirDrop, Google Drive and more.


#34. Using the Control Center

How to use the Control Center on your iPad

  1. Swipe down from the upper right corner of your desktop where you see the wifi and battery status icons. From this menu you can access many useful settings.

  2. Press and hold an icon in the menu to display additional options.

  3. Customize your options by going to Settings > Control Center. You will find sections for Included Controls and More Controls. Included Controls are the apps currently showing in the Control Center menu. More Controls are additional apps you can add.

  4. Tap the plus sign next to an app in More Controls to add it to the menu.

  5. Tap the minus sign next to an app in Included Controls and then hit remove to remove it from the menu.

  6. You can also rearrange the Included Controls by pressing and holding on the icon that looks like three lines next to a control and dragging it to a new position.

  7. Close the control center menu by touching the screen outside the control center menu or hitting the home button.
