6th Grade- August/September

It's been a great start to the new year in 6th grade science. We're focusing on classroom procedures, science skills, middle school tips for success, and our school's core values: Accountability, Responsibility, and Kindness. These values will be practiced throughout the year to guide us as we build a supportive learning community.

Since many 6th graders are experiencing a science lab for the first time, we'll begin with a Lab Safety unit. Students will learn to use equipment safely and understand the expectations for working in our lab. Their first assessment on Lab Safety is Friday, September 4. Per D300 policy, all missing assignments are due Friday, September 4th.

After Lab Safety, we'll move into our Space Science unit. Students will begin by exploring Earth’s motions in space- Rotation and Revolution!

We are so pleased to have everyone back! We are moving along through the characterstics of life unit and reviewing CER writing skills. Students will have their first summative assessment this month. Students will show mastery in the ability to make a claim based on evidence and supply reasoning using their knowledge of the five characteristics of life. Please check Schoology weekly for updates on grades and upcoming assignments.

Important Announcements

Each student needs a dedicated science notebook. Please make sure your child brings a notebook that will be used only for science class.
Students should keep a copy of their learning roadmap in their science notebook. This map will help guide lessons and show progress toward our first stop.
First summative assessment: September 11.

Celebrations

We enjoyed several “getting to know you” activities that helped students build connections and classroom community.
Students showed curiosity and teamwork during partner and small-group tasks — a wonderful start to the year!
Positive classroom habits are already forming: students are asking thoughtful questions and practicing respectful listening.

What We’re Learning Now

Current focus: examining the Mythbusters Rocket Sled Snowplow to explore core physics ideas.
- Concepts introduced: motion, frame of reference, speed, time, and distance.
- Math integration: students will use math skills to calculate acceleration. Please remind your child that math and science work together in our lessons.
Upcoming hands-on work: our first lab will use paper frogs to calculate speed — a fun activity to practice data collection and analysis.
Writing practice: students are sharpening scientific writing through CER (Claim, Evidence, Reasoning) activities such as "Slip or Trip." Invite your child to discuss this with you.
