Environmental Science - Sam Parker
This week in Science class we...
Began a unit studying evolution by looking at the rise of antibiotic resistance. We started by covering the basics of what bacteria are, where they are found and how they grow
Gathered background information about the reproductive strategies of different organisms and basic information about how genetics leads to variation in populations
Next week students will be learning about how antibiotics lead to environmental pressure and starting to practice putting together a model of how a population can change over time
If you have any questions please feel free to communicate with at sparker@cvsdvt.org
Math 1: Mark Pogact
Summary of Week 31:
Solving Systems of Equations using Substitution
Next Week
More Solving Systems using Substitution
Intro to Solving Systems using Elimination
This week students reviewed and practice solving systems using the substitution method. This topic is really the culmination of all of the algebra that students have learned and practiced over the years such as combining like terms, the distributive property, and solving equations.
Next week, students will be introduced to the strategy called elimination, to solve systems. See your student's Google Classroom for classwork, documents, and assignments.

Math 2
Summary of Week 31:
Review Converting Quadratic Equations
Summative
Next Week
Review Solving Quadratic Equations
Summative
This week, students reviewed converting quadratic equations to each of the three forms. Then students took a summative on that skill. Students decided that they wanted to take the summative for this unit's skills in chunks rather than in one big test during wrap up week. So we will be having summative assessments every Thursday for the next few weeks.
Next week, students review and take summative on solving quadratic equations by undoing and factoring. See your student's Google Classroom for classwork, documents, and assignments.

Wellness: Personal Health
This week in health, students learned about birth control and contraceptives. They compared different methods and looked at their effectiveness in preventing pregnancy and sti/ stds. Students then learned about sexually transmitted infections and how to keep yourself safe from contracting a disease. Students learned about testing and talking to your partner about STIs and contraceptives. Lastly, students ended the unit with a summative on sexual health. Next week, they will start the final unit on substance use and abuse.

Humanities
This week in social studies, we delved into our final unit of the year, which is an exploration of philosophy. We examined the philosophies of Emmanuel Kant and John Stuart Mill and how they relate to different ethical dilemmas, such as the classic Trolley problem and a lifeboat scenario. The students had some truly engaging discussions around these topics. Next week, we'll be shifting our focus to Socrates and Plato, with an emphasis on Plato's Allegory of the Cave.
All students received their final discussion and evidence assessments back and have final summative scores in Jumprope representing their work on these two targets.
In English we started a unit on short stories, poetry, and strengthening our close reading skills. Our students read and analyzed "The Rose That Grew From Concrete" by Tupac Shakur and "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson. Students also recieved their scores for their Just Mercy essays. Any students who want to revise these should schedule a connect with Sarah.

Who did you decide to save on the lifeboat scenario? Why?
Are you enjoying the philosophy so far?
What did you decide to write about for your final writing piece in English? Will you let me read it?
How do you like reading poetry and shorter fiction so far?
