It is important to read to your child each day. Reading to your child increases their vocabulary and comprehension. You can check out books from the Castro Valley Library or our Proctor School Library. You can also use YouTube or watch a "Book Talks" created by Proctor's Kindergarten teachers. For additional practice, you can help your child complete a book report or talk about our Fabulous Four Friends. Reading comprehension resources are linked in the Language Arts tab or click here.
Your child should practice reading "independently" (with support and guidance) for about ten minutes each day. Please use books provided in your home reading bag. There are also leveled books (and some guided lessons) available on our Language Arts tab or click here.
Help your child practice sight words. Activities are available under the Language Arts tab or click here.
Practice reading and writing CVC (consonant vowel consonant) words. LOTS of resources are available by clicking on the phonics link under the Language Arts tab or click here.
During the second trimester, we focus on writing informational texts in the form of "How to" books. Below is a series of lessons that will lead your child through the basic steps of creating a How to Book. If your child does not have a blank copy of this book (as shown in the videos), you can simply staple three pieces of blank paper together to create the book. You can also keep a travel journal with your child. Students on independent study should be writing about 3 sentences each school day during the second trimester.

Begin each sentence with an uppercase letter.
End each sentence with a period, question mark or exclamation point.
Leave finger spaces between words.
"Stretch out" the sounds heard in words using best kindergarten "invented" spelling. (Use Zoo Phonics or Fundations Alphabet chart as a reference.)
