We are so excited to welcome our newest kindergarteners and their families!
Self Help Skills
Your beginning kindergartener should be able to:
Use the restroom independently. This includes independently removing and then refastening necessary clothing, wiping, flushing and hand washing.
Blow his/her nose independently. This includes using a tissue, blowing, depositing the tissue in the garbage and washing hands.
Zip and unzip his/her backpack. Children should also be able to take and remove items from a backpack.
Learning Skills
Your beginning kindergartener should be able to:
Sit and listen to a story or lesson for ten minutes.
Hold a pencil with the proper grip. (See Writing for more details.) Pencil grip is a difficult thing to correct in the classroom with 25 students. We work hard on this in kindergarten, but it is best to start practicing and reinforcing a good pencil grip at home!
Academic Skills
Letters and Sounds Please practice letters and sounds (see Phonics). The majority of students come in recognizing many letters and some sounds.
Write first name. Practice beginning with an uppercase letter and using lowercase letters for the remainder of the name.
Number Sense Practice counting to 20. Practice counting groups of objects to ten.
A Backpack (without wheels please!) All kindergarteners will need to bring a backpack to school every day. We hang these backpacks outside our classrooms and use them to transport things to and from school.
A Small Snack Container (labeled clearly with your child's name) Snack containers need to be separate from your child's lunch box. The should be small. They just need to hold a small, healthy snack.
A Lunchbox or Bag Kindergarteners eat lunch at school every day.If your child chooses to bring his or her lunch, please bring it in a box or bag separate from the snack container. Lunches will remain in backpacks until it is time to eat them.
A Homework Toolbox This toolbox will remain at home. Please help your child begin to create good study habits by having several pencils, a box of crayons, small scissors, 10 small objects (ie beans, pennies) to be used as counters for math and glue or a glue stick in a toolbox/bag. Your child will use these tools to complete the monthly homework packet. The first homework packet will be sent home in early September.
Labeled jackets/sweaters Please label ALL removable clothing with your child's name!
